Really confused should I update to 8.1 ?
I had a major moment of panic this morning when I switched computer on message displayed saying updates to be installed and it would restart computer in 2 days to install updates? opted to install now instead ...took ages then computer switched off and restarted but it was just showing the blue screen with circle thingy going around saying 100% done don't switch computer off ..took ages for the usual start screen to appear was beginning to think it was stuck on the blue update screen ...Panic because I would not know what to do in this situation well only choice for me is...switch off computer using power button hoping it would reboot it ? What is it with all these updates anyhow? updated only the other day
What is the best way to go about installing these updates when you get message telling you computer will restart in 2 days ???
No likey

Yes, they've got a great deal still to learn regarding feedback to the user during those big updates.
The best policy IMHO is to close every program, then go into Control Panel > Windows Update (or the Win8 equivalent if it's different), then configure it to do the updates. If it pauses with no apparent activity just let it sit there and don't do anything else on the computer. How long to wait? I don't know, maybe after six or twelve hours start to panic."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0 -
when I first started up new computer McAfee came up as antivirus but this is only a free trial that will run out soon ...have been told Microsoft essentials will already be installed on 8 ? is this all the security you need ? also I have MSN as my browser but when I go into control panel security defender is not switched on greyed out ? is this the same as Microsoft essentials and how do I switch it on or can this only be done when McAfee has been removed? I have always used AVG in the past because the computer I used came with a free licence code ...is it possible to transfer licence over to this new computer?0

Yes Windows Defender is the Antivirus prog that comes bundled with Windows 8, and it will only become active after you disable or uninstall McAfee.
If you are very careful on the net Defender might be sufficient, but it's certainly not one of the better Antivirus progs. McAfee isn't thought to be very good either BTW.
If you like AVG, then why not install the free verion of AVG
or alternatively Avast?
I presume you previously used the paid for full AVG suite? I doubt if something that came bundled with one computer could be used on another, but no harm in downloading the free trial and seeing if your existing licence code works.0 -
Thanks yep think I will go with AVG after trial runs out with McAfee at least I know what I am doing with that ....will try licence key ...worth a shot but if no go will just have the free version.
