In a way, I think the less confident with computers you are, the easier it will be to use windows 8 - as you'll have less habits to break.
I see what you're saying but I'd word it a little differently:

If you've little or no experience of previous versions of Windows, then you won't know any better.

If you've used previous versions but lack confidence to explore and experiment, then Windows 8 will probably be extremely daunting.

If you like experimenting and exploring and don't have any urgent things to do on the computer, then learning the Metro aspects of Windows 8 might make for an interesting and challenging puzzle, like Rubik's cube or DROD or proving Fermat's Last Theorem.

You are two releases behind [with windows 8], you should update your system ASAP, for security if nothing else.
Windows 8 users don't need to update to 8.1 for a couple of years. (Windows 8 has its own support path).

Windows 8.1 users should update to "Update 1" (or whatever its called) by May sometime. As "Update 1" is done through the normal windows update method this shouldn't be an issue.

I've just swapped to Win 8 - while it's not massively hard to adjust (the Microsoft "Hiding All The Useful Functions" department do seem to have been moved from "upgrading" Office to this though), and once you tweak it about a bit it's perfectly useable - it (even upgraded to 8.1) doesn't half feel like one hell of a Frankenstein mish mash operating system... you've got the whole Metro tiles thing (fine, all well and good and if you've been using any touch screen device, fairly intuitive) and then you've got a half-normal-Windows desktop clagged on top, with annoying bits wooshing in every time you move your mouse to the edge of the screen. I can see what they were trying to achieve with it but it really doesn't work well!

Taken me a couple of days of fiddling to get it set up near how I like it (compared to a couple of hours to get Win 7 there) - but still not brilliant yet.

Probably the worst Windows I've used since Vista (ME still takes the totally awful operating system award)

I use Chrome but it's just from personal preference and finding it the best to use across multiple devices in my own experience (and I was too lazy to migrate bookmarks and stuff around and it generally does that pretty well).

Windows key + D Shows your desktop. If you are on the desktop it minimises everything.

Windows 8 is not difficult, it is just irritating :D

I'd really recommended taking the time to move to 8.1 Update 1, not least as Microsoft have said that's the baseline for further fixes and it really is so much more polished than 8.0
