I can't comment on Nest but I have used Tado...

Nest is a very, very different system to Tado - it's not mechanical at all.

It's just replacing the main thermostat with a smart one.

I've had nest since it launched in the UK 3 years ago, and it's worked perfectly for me :)
  • We just had a Nest installed as part of a new kitchen installation, thought I would take the plunge!

So far, so good: the electrician/ plumber installed the system, having done many before, and it seems to be working perfectly. The settings take a bit of getting used to, you don't set the Schedule to switch On and Off Twice a Day as I used to with the old Honeywell, but rather set what temperature you want the room to be at a certain time f day. So, e.g., set the temp to be 20 degrees at 7am, then 15 at 10am, which would effectively switch the system off. Which for me is better than constantly 'riding' the thermostat on the old system.

But the greatest feature of this system is that you can use your phone or iPad to monitor the Nest while away from home. For example, if every family member 'ties' their phone to the Nest, then when everyone is out the of the house, the Nest will go into 'Eco' mode. 😜

    And it looks great!

What happens if someone doesn't take their phone with them?

Reading this thread, I can't see what the point of this is, or why a good old fashioned thermostat with timer which seems to cost 10% of this isn't good enough for the job.

Seems to be automation for the sake of it.

In that event, the thermostat would not know they had left and the heating would remain on.
It would still be possible for someone else with a phone registered on the system to turn it down manually.

If you have people in the house who regularly forget their phones, then this isn't a system for you.
If you have a fixed schedule and can accurately program a timer to suit your movements, then you wont get as much benefit either.
If, on the other hand, you don't have a regular schedule that neatly fits a timer, and have people who regularly forget to turn down an old fashioned thermostat before they leave but never forget their phones, then a home presence system is great for avoiding heating an empty house.

Its not for everyone, but it's not pointless.
Edit: I should add that I'm not saying home presence detection alone is a good reason to buy one of these expensive systems, but I don't want to clutter the thread.

NEST can be operated manually in the home.

I've got v1 - it looks nice, easy to operate but don't think it saves energy and perhaps uses more.

I used to have a programmer which switched my heating on, say at 0700, till the wall stat said its warm enough say 18 deg - that could well be an hour later.

Nest knows its cold outside and says to itself : I need to get to 18 deg by 0700 therefore I will switch myself on at perhaps 0600.

Yes. No doubt it offers a superior level of comfort, but as you say it would likely not save any money.

In the situation you have described in bold, a normal system (like mine) might fail to provide the extra heating required to make it up to 18c by 7am, but since I would not bother to turn it back on the Nest would have cost me more. By starting early it would have increased to heating period (increasing the cost) to make sure it hit that desired temperature. My system would simply fail to get to 18c and I would care little. I would have saved a few pennies though.

I thought that Nest had a list of approved installers.
