Disagree entirely. All I did was pass on the info I got from NEST directly and relay that to OP. It may well have been a botched install but NEST installed it and then spent two hours trying to diagnose the issue. Why wouldn't I believe them.

Trying to blame me for not having done my research properly is also a mistake. I would agree with you if I had tried a DIY install but I paid the manufacturer to do this to avoid hassle or making mistakes.

That is why experts exist be it doctors, mechanics, or electricians. They allow me to be comfortable as a lay-man and I expect them to get things right.
  • With our homes getting smarter, I think Nest is the start of something big. In the next few years, people will be controlling more and more physical devices through their phone (or maybe their watches!) I can recommend a nest pro installer. talk to the guys at Tage London on 0208 300 0102
  • Hi guys, i read this thread with great anticipation as i have just had my NEST thermostat installed.

The best way to use GEO FENCING for free is to download IFTTT

You can create rules, eg if GPS location then NEST turns ON etc etc.

It also allows you to receive emails if the room drops to a certain temp etc.

    Maybe you can help me?
My NEST thermostat is currently plugged in via USB and balanced on a table - NOT ideal! What do i need to wire it straight off the light switch, obviously if i just put L & N into a light switch and plug into the back of the NEST i will blow it up as it needs a 12V not 240V. Not sure what terminology i need to get but it's basically whatever is inside an apple iphone charger that steps down the voltage to usb. I'd love some help on this as i want to fix it to the wall near the light switch asap.

    ENJOY IFTTT.com !

Just to update that I actually went with a Salus iT500. I wanted a wireless stat and this allows to connect to the internet to set up heating etc.

It will be up and running soon and can't wait. :)

When my Nest was installed they put the fixed heat link unit where the old Honeywell thermostat was, using the existing wiring (right next to my front door in the hallway).

The thermostat itself is in my lounge on a table, connecting wirelessly to the heat link. I don't use the USB charger that comes with it as it makes a horrible buzzing noise (I use a 3rd party one from an old mobile phone instead)

I'm interested in Nest from a money saving perspective. Now that I've got my Electricity consumption locked down and controlled as much as possible (using a Smappee device) I'm on to my heating which is my next biggest cost. Has anyone done the maths yet and calculated how much it's actually saving them yet? also if you could let me know heating type (gas or oil) and size/type of home, that would be great. I'm not with N-Power so would have to fork out for this myself and would like user experience from a money saving perspective before I buy.

Unless you are the kind of person who leaves your heating on all day and makes no attempt to economise at all, I doubt the savings will ever justify the investment.

You would save more using a standard timer.

It makes a cool toy though!
