Our debt is out of control and he doesn't know! Not sure how to tell him, he is going to go through the roof. he knows we have some debt but not all of it!!! I don't know what to do!!! I know I can cut back on the mobile phones and the sky but not sure what else to do!!!

Hi, we have two kids, one 7, the other 4 in a couple of weeks.
Do you know where I can get the phone line cheaper, this is only for line rental with Sky as we use our mobiles for calls. I am looking at reducing my mobile and will be telling the other half to do his too. We don't have a water meter, I was always told if you have more people than bedrooms it isn't worth having a meter. I don't drink at all, the drink is for my husband. We have just stopped smoking as we can't afford to do that either.
Eating out is a takeaway once a week, a little treat for the kids!! The loan has got 4 years left to go, not sure about the APR, it's not the best but not as bad as the previous loan we had!!! The Family days out are little visits to the pub occasionally, the kids love to go and play at the pub. I only have a coke and the kids have squash but other half has a couple of pints which is why it costs so much!! the credit cards are 0% for one, the others I think are all at 17.9% APR. way too high but can't get another card to transfer onto 0%. the shopping is high, will have to be very strict and stick to a list and only a list! We can't remortgage as husband is self employed and books don't show earnings high enough!!
I don't know how I am going to tell him as he thinks I am better with money than him. I had an operation last year and had reduced pay from work which is why we are in this mess and I feel like it is all my fault!0 -
He might hit the roof or he might not but you do need to bring him up to speed with the state of the household finances. Your income cannot afford the lifestyle you are currently living so he has to be on the same page so that this can get nipped in the bud before it gets worse.
MallyGirl has identified several things you can cut out or reduce which is a good starter for ten.

There are lots of free places you can take the children rather than taking them to the pub.0

I have said that we put away £100 for Tax and NI as that is what should be happening but we end up having to dip into that for other things! but yes it would be enough! We do end up having to the put his tax bill on the credit card.
I agree Pixie I don't like going to the pub at all and we normally end up there after taking the kids somewhere for free!!

Maybe print out the SOA so he can see in black and white exactly where you are with the finances. Telling him will be like ripping off a plaster and I'm sure you'll sleep much better once it's all out in the open.

I am so worried! I know it is his responsibility too but I feel like it is all my fault. I don't put my foot down enough when I should and if I hadn't had the operation last year (though it was important) we wouldn't be in this mess (or at least not as big of a mess)! I just don't know how to start!!0

I have me, OH, 12yr old daughter and 2 big mud loving dogs and pay around £25 pcm for water with a meter but we did train ourselves to be water wise. Water based on rateable value would kill us.
I pay for phone line from BT 12 months in advance (on 0% card) and it worked out at £11.75 pcm.
I think little treats for the kids are going to have to take a break - you can't afford it and they are young so won't remember it anyway.
Childcare costs seems high for one 4 yr old and 1 in school - are you getting your free 15 hours a week?
Fundamentally you make £3500 but immediately spend £1000 on mortgage and £935 on loans/cards and £850 on childcare and £100 on tax/NI. Take out £500 for food and you have £115 left for everything else - gas/elec/phone/car/insurance/life.

I have looked at Stepchange and it looks like a DMP is the only way to go, just need to find the balls to talk to my husband about it!0 -

Once he is in school I would switch to school based after school club or a childminder that only charges when he is there. Holiday clubs usually take from age 5. I bought childcare vouchers through work to help with this - have only just stopped these.he does start school in September so that will be a help!
