I knew someone would say that.. I and many others switch off regularly with no ill effects, there was a time before home routers were ubiquitous when everyone did that.

Allow me to clear this up before it becomes boring - Neither of these statements is true. Sometimes it will cause problems (you're more likely to get a configuration error if you have to configure every single day) sometimes it'll solve them (more chance of getting a fresh connection).

In reality, it makes little difference. It's safe and usually more robust to leave it on all the time. Particularly with larger networks.

It may or may not affect the connection speed - it depends whether the ISP's Dynamic Line Management system interprets the down time as an unstable connection or not. If it doesn't, no problem. If it does, it will increase target snrm (thus slowing the connection speed) until it decides it's stable enough to reduce it again (thus increasing connection speed). The trouble is, it's very quick to reduce the speed, but can take up to 10 days to up it again :(

I leave my fibre modem and router on 24/7. I make sure its when ventilated as it does get quite warm does the modem. I have mine on a small corner shelf. modem is attached under the shelf and router on top

  • I was told not to switch modem off...just got a new computer is it ok to leave it switched on all the time in sleep mode ? I usually shut my computer down overnight but it is nice not having to power it back up in the morning just click the mouse and away we go...but is this safe.?

I used to use hiberbate but I find that with Windows 8.1 and more memory there is no diference in time between a full restart and recovery from hibernation so I power down. I haven't tried sleep but I'm guessing it will use minimal power and recover pretty fast. I may give it a go myself although in truth startup is pretty swift anyway.

You can leave it in sleep or hibernate, for as long as you like, nothing bad will happen. That said, you should do a complete shutdown and reboot or a restart occasionally.

I have personally witnessed that turning the router off overnight had no effect on one internet connection and that leaving the router on all the time improved speeds on a different internet connection.
