    It's best to "lose it" and then fortuitously find it in the event of problems with the replacement.

    I still have my paper licence only, and keep meaning to get it changed to a photo card, but it is such a faff.

    The reason why I WILL get it done is that, apart from my passport, it's the only photo proof of identity I'd have. It's a nuisance to have to take my passport when I need to prove identity, which seems to happen a lot these days, whereas a photo licence would be on my person all the time.
