Powdered skimmed milk? UHT milk? Uuuuuuuurgh:eek:

Milk tastes much, much better out of a glass bottle. The stuff in the plastic just does not have the same taste.

My current milkman delivers at 3 am!:T

For all the reasons others have given, I say, support your milkman, if you can.

Powdered skimmed milk is fine in cooking. It is light and compact to pack and unpack. use it in the breadmaker, soups and sauces.

Well, I have to say that we keep supplies of both powdered & UHT skimmed milk in the cupboards. The powdered is mainly for cooking & breadmaking, and the UHT (skimmed - not semi or full-fat, as they have a nasty taste, I think) are kept in case we run out of "proper" milk from the milkman.
However, I have had times when money was really tight, and the only milk available was powdered. If you make it up then put it in the fridge for an hour or so you can't tell the difference between that & ordinary skimmed - honest! (especially if it's in a glass jug!!!)

And yes, all other things considered, I agree that the best milk is in real glass bottles:T

Mind you, our milkman comes early, before 5am, which is a great help. Not only that, he hides the milk between our car & the front door so no one can see it and take it for a walk! (we once had some disappearing milk, so ever since then he has put it there. I phoned the dairy and they didn't charge us for the milk we didn't get, which was nice of them, cos it wasn't their fault)

I mainly use milk in tea and on cereal, and loathe UHT in tea. Powdered milk in tea is also a no-no. I always used full-fat milk until a couple of years ago when I had to switch to semi-skimmed due to digestive system problems following radiotherapy. I don't really like semi-skimmed and skimmed milk tastes like water to me! Also it does not taste nice in tea. Just call me Mrs Fussy.

We neither of us have a weight problem (him tall and skinny, me a small size 10), and most of our diet is "low-fat", so full-fat milk was a small treat. I do miss my "proper" milk!

I work with many many elderly people for them milkman is a lifeline with communities not being great at taking care of our lonely elderly. The milkman is quick to pick up if milk not taken in, or if curtains normally open and not etc. So maybe not cheap but they are certainly a great service
