MS Dilemma

  • I still have milk delivered although it is more expensive because my milkman is a lovely bloke and also because I'd hate to see him go out of business as there must be elderly people who depend on their daily delivery.

my granddad always had his milk delivered and wouldn't have it any other way. we used to take him to the supermarket once a week to get his shopping. I suggested getting milk their as it is cheaper and will last in the fridge and he could always ring a family member to take more if he ran out. then he told me the real reason he a pint delivered every day was that his (v good) neighbours would notice if it was left on the doorstep after 10am and worry. In the later years of his life this paid off as myself and other family members were alerted by niegbours that things may not be right and were able to go round and get medical attention. his daily pinta gave him piece of mind and kept him at home and independant in his 90's. a small price to pay for piece of mind.

Just been told ours is going up 5p for each 2 pint bottle, so that makes it 80p. I'll still be getting the usual 4 a week for now but won't be ordering extra.

sillyvixen, makes sense really, never thought of it that way, saying that as I mentioned ours hasn't been daily delivered for what must be 2 years + now.
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi all,

Just wanted to add my two penn'orth! My DH is a milkman and does a wonderful job. His dairy guarantee delivery before 8.00 am (unless of course something happens beyond their control, breakdowns, heavy snow etc). The milk they supply is from a local farm and so it's lovely and fresh, and by having a doorstep delivery you're keeping more than one person in work. As someone else has said they provide an invaluable service to the elderly in a community and on collecting days my DH is often (and I mean often) the only person some of his customers will have seen for days. It's not a particularly nice job, foul weather, v early starts etc and it's really hard going round about dawn when you seem to have ages before you finish and get back to the depot (believe me I know). On a Friday he leaves home at 2.am, gets back for lunch about 12, quick sleep and back out to collect at 3 till approx 8, sleep deprivationand no social life are the norm  !! Just a different angle to look at it from!

  • I say stay with the milkman. I know I am being old fashioned (at 24) but it just doesn't taste the same out of the plastic bottle and I agree with others, you will probably end up buying other things when saving your £5! I know I did when I lived in a non-bottled area!

The milk is there for you in the morning, ready, in a lovely glass bottle. Your t milk will not be the same. You have to remember you are not as such paying more for you milk with the milkman as you are paying for the milk and its subsequent delivery.

Stop supermarket giants squeezing the farmers of every penny on every pint. Stay local, ease your conscience!

    Save the milkman people!

Hmmm, maybe our milkman is different. He came to see us and we decided to give it a go, it was only after a few months of having it I relaised he is CHEAPER than the supermarket. We get it in Poly Bottles from a local dairy so he must get the same stuff as Tesco does but he charges us 99p for a 4 pint of milk - we used to get charged 99p for delivery but this has gone down to 10p. We have recommended him to a lot of people so maybe this is why but we pay around £6.50 a week for 24 pints of milk and the delivery charge. He does come on Mon, Weds & Fri but that doesn't bother us as it saves us having to get it from Tesco and we always (usually) have milk in the fridge.
  • My mum was told by her WI group that milkman deliveries DO help the farmer because they get more per pint and the recycled bottles are more eco friendly they were advised to continue getting deliveries. The milkman service will die out altogether if it's not supported and that would be bad for the housebound. Thats partly why we get it delivered and the comfort of knowing it's there first thing. I do understand the MS dilemma though, we live opposite a Sainsbury's!

I think it depends on what you think you're paying for. If it's just the milk, then get it at Tesco or Lidl. But it's not, is it? It's also about your personal ethics and the service you get from the milkman. So you need to decide how much those 'extras' are worth to you.

I continued using the milkman because I liked the traditional aspect of it all, but I was persuaded that the cost was much greater than from the supermarket and gave it a try.
The trouble was that it makes the tea taste disgusting, does no-one else find this, or am I just using it as an excuse to carry on supporting the milkman?
  • I always had doorstep milk, not only because I have a friend who was a milkman for years but to support local businesses and to keep the service viable for those who couldn't easily get to a store to buy it. But ths year I've given up. I'm fed up with getting milk that is past its prime. I guess it sits unrefridgerated on a milkcart for who knows how long, then presumably they deliver the oldest bottle first. Fine in winter, but not in summer!!
