  • Why does supermarket milk take so long to go off? ...and why, when both types are in the fridge, does the supermarket milk not get touched, but the milk from the milkman gets drunk by the bottle?

I have my milk delivered but only have 5 pints a week but that costs me £10+ a fortnight so mine is more than £1 per pint but as I dont work it would cost more in petrol to fetch it and I know I would buy other stuff as well
Always remember that you are unique, just like everybody else:wave:

Yikes, a pound a pint! Who are you getting to deliver it?

  • I feel very bad about stopping having milk delivered. I was a most strident advocate of the 'use it or lose it' brigade and although it was costing me a lot more than supermarket milk I didn't care.So many village shops and post offices have already been lost because folk are buying everything at supermarkets these days. This is a very rural area and although we don't use masses of milk between the 2 of us it was handy not to have to get the car out and go to fetch some(a round trip of 12 miles to the nearest shops unless I risked the petrol station a mile nearer whose prices were ridiculously high:eek: ).

On the down side, the milkman covered a massive area and arrived here about 2.30 in the afternoon. The milk had been on the float all day being bounced up and down over hill and dale. The only place it could be left was in full sun(as we were always out in the afternoon) and despite providing a 'box' for him to put it in it seemed to go 'off' before we'd finished the bottle. I always ended up pouring some away and having to make do with powdered milk until his next delivery.

So very reluctantly I cancelled his deliveries. He comes through the village still(we are at home more in the afternoons nowadays) but seems to zoom through without any drops in our particular part of the village. I expect he'll soon be a thing of the past and I regret the passing of what was once a very valuable service. But whereas his pinta every other day was always going 'off' before finished, I now buy 4 pint bottles from the supermarket (use one and freeze the rest) and one 4 pint bottle lasts nearly all week and is fresh to the last drop.
  • We don't get milk delivery out here in the backwoods, but the local village can and it's in plastic bottles from Wiseman so it's a no for milk but i buy meat, potatoes , eggs from local sources. Other veggies are hard to get local as they are not grown up here and there is a distinct lack of Veg box schemes and farm shops. Saying that i do all my own baking including bread, pizza etc.
You can only do so much but every little helps.
  • This all makes very interesting reading, as I would love to have milk delivered but I have no idea how to find out whether it is available! We have just moved into a new place in Portsmouth. Any good tips on finding out?

Where I used to live in Scotland I *once* saw a milkman (at about 4am) and asked whether there was a number or leaflet or whatever where I could contact him but he said I'd just have to catch him - didn't feel like getting up at that time again, so I never did it.

One day you might be too old to get to your local shops and we always supported our local milkman when he existed. Most of them these days deliver other produce as well such as dairy products, potatoes, etc and they are a lifeline to the elderly and those who can't carry heavy loads home. Once you lose a service like this, it is probably never economic to re-introduce it, so I'd be tempted to stick with it and help him stay in business.
  • I get my milk from the supermarket as the milkman doesn't come until nearly lunchtime when I am at work so the milk sits on the step all day not only out of the fridge but also advertising the fact that there is no-one here.

I just started getting my milk delivered again after 10+ years of buying it from Mr T. I'm glad to be supporting the local dairy even if it does cost more.

My DS thinks its great to open the door in the morning and find 2 pints on the door step and tries to beat me downstairs just to be the first to get to the milk. :D

Its stopped me "nipping to Mr T for a pint" and spending a fortune.:j

The kids also say it tastes nicer and there's no plastic milk bottles to try and recycle. I just need to swap the tetra pacs now
