Hi, im new here and hope all you can help.
I am doing a modern apprentiship in scotland but ive had problems with my wages from day one.
I work 50 hours a week at a rate of 9.60 flat rate agreeing to work outside the 37.5 hours a week. We get paid at then end of each month some months being 5 weeks and most being 4 weeks
for me to work out my pay before tax I would
9.60 X 200or250 (depending 4 or 5 weeks)
I am getting less than that paid each month. How can I approch my boss about this? I'm fairly shy person and not very confrontational unlike my boss who is really a successful and ruthless business man.
many thanks in advance

Can't comment on the wages but 50 hours per week on an apprenticeship is well above the maximum allowed which is 48 per week including your time at college/training provider for over 19s and 40 hours for 16-18yrs.0

What is on your payslips? They should show your hourly rate and the number of hours worked.

Are you looking at your gross pay (before tax and NI deductions) or your net pay (what actually ends up in your bank account after the required deductions) when you say you're getting less than the 9.60 x 200 or 250?Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

Hi, thanks everyone for getting back to me, sorry i am just home from work.
For the 50 hours a week it is on our contract that we sign to agree to work these hours. I honestly dont mind working 50 hours keep the bank balance happy :-)
I have a few examples of my payslips which i might add are very vauge
My pay slips DO NOT CONTAIN
number of hours paid for
rate of pay
They contain a "basic pay" which is 40 hours per week for however many weeks where worked in that period whether it be 4 weeks or 5
And "extra hours" which should be the reminder 10 hours per week for however many weeks in that same period, again 4 or 5.Pay slip for February"EXTRA HOURS 288.00B"
"BASIC PAY 1536.00B"
"TAXABLE PAY 1824.00"
"TOTAL PAY 1824.00"
Deductions
"TAX 207.40"
"N.I. 141.36"
"DEDUCTIONS 348.76"
"NET PAY 1475.24"Pay slip for March"EXTRA HOURS 192.00B"
"BASIC PAY 1536.00B"
"TAXABLE PAY 1728.00"
"TOTAL PAY 1728.00"
Deductions
"TAX 188.00"
"N.I. 129.84"
"DEDUCTIONS 317.84"
"NET PAY 1410.16"BOTH ARE BASED ON 4 WEEK MONTHS SO WILL BE OVER 200 HOURS!0 -
In the first post you said you are on 37.5 hours per week, but on the last one you said 40. Which is it?
You need to remember a month is not 4 or 5 weeks. What usually happens if you are paid monthly is that you get 1/12th of a years pay each month. So your basic is £1536 x 12 = £18,432 per year. Divide by 52 gives you £354.46 per week. Divide by 37.5 if that is your weekly hours and you are on £9.45 an hour. At £9.60 for overtime you have been paid 30 hours in February and 20 hours in March. That could have been from the month before. You may need to deduct breaks from your hours if you stop for lunch. Does 20 hours seem anywhere near right for Februarys overtime?0 -
its 4 weekly in this instance.
Can you please break it down as to how you worked it out?
Heres is how i have been doing it
Basic pay
40 X 4 =
160 X 9.60 = 1536.00
Extra hours
10 X 4 = 40
40 X 9.60 = 384.00
Adding both together
=1920
Assuming i pay 20% tax
1920 X 0.8
15360 -

I work 50 hours a week paid 9.60 per hour. we get paid on the last friday of each month.
I have not worked more or less than the 50 hours stated. and the 37.5 hours is the maximum eu working hours so i needed to sign a contract agreeing to work more than the 37.50 -
Your basic pay seems to be correct, it's the extra hours that don't add up if you are doing 10 extra hours per week.
I think you are going to have to ask your employer.

Your basic pay is not an issue - I worked it out as £1536 x 13 = £19968 /52 is £384 per week/ 40 hours is £9.60
Your figures certainly work for the basic - but I'm still not convinced it is 4 weekly. The op said he gets paid on the last friday of each month, which sounds like monthly to me.0 -

What hours do you work each day? Do you get a lunchbreak? 50 hours from Monday to Friday or do you work overtime on Saturday?0
