Look on smoothound.co.uk there's plenty of reasonably priced B+B's in the area who will drop you off at the airport for not a lot. Search for "Horley" which is the town closest to Gatwick, and closer than a lot of places that bill themselves as Gatwick.

Yeah, most of them aren't the ritz, but they're cheap and available. I stopped in this one http://www.gwhh.com/ for quite a while when I was working in the area. It was clean, basic, breakfast was ok, and the staff were friendly.

thanks so much flying with dd to graduation in Belfast and flying from Gatwick and just googled London hotels! i knew you lot would come up with the solution!

The problem is only City airport is actually in London proper and it plus Heathrow are the only ones inside the M25. The other "london" airports are some way away from the city and arguably are just trading on the name, particularly London Southend Airport that only releatively recently added the London to its name despite being 45 miles away and other closer airports not being "london"

At Gatwick you really can't beat the Premier Inn North Terminal as it just just opposite so you can easily stagger out of bed in the morning and straight to check-in. Even if you are flying from the South Terminal the transfer is easy.
