? dodgy e-mail from nationwide

hi guys,

i've just got an e-mail from nationwide stating my account has been deactivated due to fraud problems, it gave me a link which looked genuine enough where I could reactivate it. However, I don't have a nationwide account, my kids do and a while ago I entered a competiton in their name and gave my e-mail as a contact so i'm not sure if it's a mistake, if they yhink i'm the account holder or whether it's a scam. I've contacted nationwide and forwarded them the e-mail but just wanted you guys to be aware.

    Hi guys
this isn't a comp link but think it may relate to one. I've just got an e-mail from nationwide saying my account is deactivated due to fraud issues and giving me a genuine looking link where I can reactivate it. However i don't hold an account with them but my kids do, a while ago there was a comp onhere for nationwide customers and I entered for my kids and gave my e-mail so not sure if it's a mistake or a scam. I've contacted nationwide but just wanted to let you guys know, I know it's the comp forum but seen as you're all so kind to post the comps and answers I just wanted to return the favour.

    It's fake. Delete it.
Many tx to all who post constructively in all the forums!
  • It'll be a scam. They wouldn't give you a link to log in through an email, they'd instruct you to go directly to the site and log in there. Also, unless your kids internet bank (which I highly doubt) you wouldn't get emails concerning their accounts, and reactivating them. You'd have to go into their branch and talk to someone there to do that.

i recieved this too - yesterday.....well actually, i recieved a notice from my ISP saying they'd quarintined a Phishing scam email...and it said nationwide.

its nothing to do with a comp by nationwide or any comp, its just a phishing email. everyone gets them at some point. my yahoo acc lets the most through. i get letters from nigeria everyday askng me to send money, and my details....i report every single one but it never does any good.

in short, your bank will never email you asking for details, or asking you to click links etc. if you are ever unsure, contact your bank by telephone on their usual landline number.

B*s*ards obviously get some vunerable / nieve people to do it. they wouldn't continue otherwise.

Emails from all banks are doing the rounds at the moment.
Best advice is delete it straight away
Your Bank will never contact you by email
The link does look genuine but its a phishing email

    Phishing is:
The act of sending an email to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. The e-mail directs the user to visit a Website where they are asked to update personal information, such as passwords and credit card, social security, and bank account numbers, that the legitimate organization already has. The Web Site, however, is bogus and set up only to steal the user’s information.

There is an address to forward them onto but I can't remember it now. I'll look on the Nationwide site if I get time.
