in Credit cards
Hi hope its ok to post this here....
I'm not holding out much but...
I pay my credit card on time every month so its at zero all the time...no interest.
Well got my bill in for £21 odd and could have sworn it was to be paid before the 7th of this month...well I realised late on the 3th that it actually said the 4th and what I was looking at was the year (07):D Anyway paid on the third but I looked at my online statement and I've been charged £12 for late payment.
Now I can understand why this is but i phoned and got a guy (who I didn't understand because of his accent) and when I asked if it can be cleared he said 'no it has to be paid'......do you think I should phone again or am I wasting my time? I'm gutted because I have really good credit etc and this has annoyed me ever so slightly.
Mind you it will teach me to read it right next time if nothing else eh?;)

Hi
I had a similar problem a few months ago - I always pay my bill on time too and have no outstanding balance but forgot to pay my bill!! My card is with Goldfish and I gave them a ring and they refunded the charge as it was the first time I had made a late payment.
Which credit card do you have ? I would have thought it was definately worth a call to them !
Good Luck:hello: :hello: :hello: Remember - its nice to be nice !0 -
Thanks Lilycat...I have an Abbey credit card.
I know it is entirely my fault but I'm gutted!!LOL
I'm going to give them a call....another 15 min waiting in line!!! But hey 12 quid is 12 quid!!!;)
I think it works out about 12 hours late it wasn't like it was days or weeks or anything but I think it would automatically go on eh? So I need to talk to a real person!!!You may walk and you may run

Well I tried and they are NOT taking it off they say they are strict about it. I was 12 hours out!!! I feel like closing the account!! Great company!!!
Or I might set up a direct debit account!!!:D
Heres a tip....don't read your statement upside down!!:rotfl:You may walk and you may run

Abbey/MBNA used to give you one day’s grace (so if payments arrived the day after it was due, that was still OK). But that was changed some months back; maybe at the same time, when the charges were reduced to £12.00.
It’s like flying with one of the budget airlines. The check-out closes at a certain time, and even if you’re only one minute late, you would have missed your flight.
Setting up a DD for the minimum payment, is definitely a good idea.

I like to pay all the amount in one go...to mean to pay interest and the guy said you can STILL get a direct debit to pay all of it every month so might go for that!!.....you learn something new every day!!
Thanks x
If the rules changed a few months ago they are probably really trying hard to do their jobs right!! No worries it could have been worse I suppose!!You may walk and you may run

I do it by standing order for a set amount so I know minimum has been paid and then I transfer enough to clear my card once or twice a month. (not the 0% apr one ofcourse :rotfl:) This is only because I use the Tesco card for everything to rack up the CC points
I could do DD but frankly I don't trust banks anymore so I'd rather deal with it myself and KNOW it's been done...
As for the £12... good luck - I don't see why they should budge but they might
at least it was £12 and not £35

A Direct Debit for the minimum payment, will take that particular sum out of your account on the day payment is due. You can still make one ore more additional manual payments, of any sum you choose. So if your balance is £200 with a minimum payment of £5, pay an additional £195.poppyolivia wrote: »I like to pay all the amount in one go...to mean to pay interest and the guy said you can STILL get a direct debit to pay all of it every month so might go for that!!.....
Sometimes people do not realize the way the DD works. Once it is set up, it will take the money due, and it will be taken every month. So, even if you have paid off the whole balance of £200, it will still take the £5 on the day. (The computer cannot decide, that everything is paid and no DD is to be taken out). In this case, you would have paid £205.
Do not rely on the DD to be in place, until you can see in your bill that the sum of xxx will be taken out of your account on that particular day.0 -
You need to be sure of the 'workings' of your particular card to be certain of avoiding interest though.bengal-stripe wrote: »A Direct Debit for the minimum payment, will take that particular sum out of your account on the day payment is due. Sometimes people do not realize the way the DD works. Once it is set up, it will take the money due, and it will be taken every month.
For example, some providers (Egg being one) say that if you make a payment outside the 5 day DD window (of an amount greater than the DD), then they will not collect the minimum payment DD. This means that you will not clear your balance and so will incur interest on the next statement, and you won't stop it until you clear the full statement balance for two consecutive months or you overpay and create a small credit balance.0 -

When I phoned this morning the guy said I'd be better off with a DD but I said it was no use to me because I pay the balance EVERY month no matter what it is. He said this was fine as whatever was on the card would come off??????? I said I didn't realise they did that ( thought it would be the minimum) and he said no it would take out what I owed......thats why I said in a previous post that you learn something new every day. Either that or the guy was just trying to get me to shut up and get me off the phone!!:D
He said he was sending the forms out so I'll wait and see but I can't understand how they would be able to do it.
TINE: Totally agree with you..thought I would chance it though with it being only 12 hrs if that!! Youre right though better that £35!! You learn by your mistakes as they say.You may walk and you may run

I got a £12 charge back last month. I bank with the RBOS and have one of their cc cards too. I paid about 4 days before payment was due. Despite it being taken straight out of my bank account it didn't go into my cc account until after the day it was due. I had transferred the money online. All my bank accounts come up online when I log on, including my cc account. I couldn't see why they couldn't transfer it instantly. I phoned up and got the £12 credited straight away to my cc account.0
