As has been pointed out, however, surround sound puts you in the MIDDLE of the sound. If someone is on the screen talking, the sound will come from there. What comes from the rear, will be mostly effects from the rear, NOT dialogue.

Only if that's how you want it to be, you can set it up how you wish.

    Hi

I would be very very grateful if someone can narrow down the system or technology I need and then I can read up on the right thing to buy. So we are looking into getting sound to the back of the room, and if possible to improve the sound then I would be interested. Due to the work involved (i.e. hiding cables etc) I dearly want to get this right and future proof.

FYI - we have a 5 year old Sony TV and currently use a really old freesat sky box. We are hoping to purchase a Humax freesat in the near future.

    Many Thanks

You can use surround sound to help hear dialog better, I turn my centre channel up but in your case it’s just a case of enabling the sound to be in stereo not surround.
With most surround amp you have different playback options, these include effects as well as EQ or decoding like DTS or Dolby, but you can configure a system fairly simply to fit the speakers you have (large or small) and the playback format, mono, stereo surround as well as levels for each set like bass, front , centre (dialog) and rear .

For example this would work for you:

I have some friends with a newborn baby and lots of hardwood floors making the house very noisy, to keep the noise of the TV down, they have a small surround sound set with little satellite speakers , with the surround set to stereo and the speakers set either side of their sofa they can hear everything but keep the volume quite low. The sofa is a good 8-10 ft from the TV, they get the sound from the TV or centre speaker at quite low level while the satellite speakers carry the same signal to the tine satellite speakers. Because its in stereo the speakers all carry the same signal, they don’t bother with rear speakers for now but will add them when they get through the first year of baby sleeping :)
Try and get a good AV amp and not a cheap all in one system, the sound bar would be no good and probably make things worse for clarity. something like this.

Many rate the Onkyo brand and there is an app to adjust the sound levels . Then buy speakers separate..I’m sure richer sounds could help you if you explain what you want to do..

Hope that all makes sense and helps..
