Right - so you can't afford JL - well neither can I! So coming on here complaining about what you could have had had you bought from JL is irrelevant.

The point is that some companies offer levels of service/guarantee over and above your rights under SoGA; some don't. Currys have made a fair and reasonable offer of £115 so the oven you've had the use of for a year has cost £34.
That's less than £3 per month! You couldn't have rented one for that price!

The next day someone calls me from the Currys Repair Team. They say it would cost too much to repair, fair enough, so they want to give us a replacement. They will send a credit note for the exact same cooker for £115.

What are they actually offering you? A credit note for the same cooker, which isn't available?

Under the SoGA you are entitled to a refund, less a deduction for the use you've had. Your refund should be in whatever manner you originally paid, so presumably cash.

You can agree to take a credit note if you want, but I'd insist on a better offer if so.

Look at my name Valli - we can't afford John Lewis. Our old oven packed in roundabout Easter last year too, so we panicked and bought an oven that was in stock that we could take home that day. Currys is just around the corner, John Lewis is not. They had a built-in oven available, ready and waiting for us to take home. £149.99 was and still is a lot of money to us and it was by no means the cheapest built in oven they had in stock.

I wonder what will break down next Easter?

Perhaps that explains why john lewis offered a 2 year warranty? If their price was higher?

However I have noticed that John Lewis is becoming very competitive with pricing. I got my TV there for just £10 more but it came with a 3 year warranty and they could take away my old one so was better value for money than the one from the cheaper retailer.

You can ofc ask them to increase their offer but imo, their offer is already more than fair.

John Lewis have one for £173, and 5 models for less than what you say is the cheapest from Currys. Their delivery is free for items costing more than £50.
  • Noooo, <deep breath> I'm really not trying to come across as an a-hole.

I was making the point that many retailers (I only named one) and manufacturers guaranteed white goods for up to 2 years as a demonstration that most people think this is a reasonable period for a white good to last, regardless of how much you paid for it.

If used correctly then something essential such as an oven, should last longer than one year and 2 weeks, do you not think?

Now you all seem to be saying that Currys are being reasonable in offering £115 off the price of an oven we can no longer buy in their store. Perhaps they are. Perhaps I am being too naffed off about the fact that if the oven was still within its one year guarantee period, I wouldn't be having this problem. Perhaps I just really wanted someone to come round and fix the issue. Perhaps I wanted an exact replacement and if that was not possible, perhaps I would have liked 3/4 off the price of their cheapest inbuilt oven.

I'm clearly not going to get that. So do excuse my feeling of angst, as I have already explained. Cooking over Easter for everyone was made very difficult and I don't appreciate the fact that I'm also going to be just under £100 out of pocket because I bought an oven that was not of satisfactory quality.

If the oven isn't built to last more than a year they shouldn't be selling it.

Apols - I skim read (we all do it;)) and I thought you were being offered a partial refund. I'd go back and negotiate for a partial refund.

However, surely the credit note can be applied against ANYTHING Curry's are selling?

  • Ah, I've x-posts with many of you. Thank you for the more sympathetic replies.

Yes, they have offered us a credit note for £115 which they say is the retail price of the exact oven now. Only they failed to tell me that they no longer sell that oven. The cheapest online is £199.99.

If I can ask them to give us a refund of £115 on our card - which is how we paid, then that would be better as I think I might go to John Lewis and stuff Currys off.

  • Valli - I NEVER skim-read! ;)

I don't know what form the credit note will take.
I think I'll get in touch with them and ask for the refund. I'd feel a lot happier with that.
    Thanks all.

You may fnd that the credit note is for less than what they are offering you. They want you to buy another oven off them. The credit note could also have time limits attached.

The offer seems fair to me.

I agree completely (bold bit). I overlooked that it is a credit note they are offering.
