Today I received a letter from P Smart Parking stating that I owe £90 to be paid for parking in a retail outlet. The maximum stay is 3 hours and due to circumstances out of my control I over stayed by 20 minutes. I have checked on various forums and have had much conflicting replies: i.e my credit rating will be affected, taken to court, the fine will increase if not paid, ignore them, the bailiffs will call round etc, etc. Please help -- do I pay? do I ignore? do I appeal? I really dont know what to do here.

Don't know which the other 'various forums' (can you tell us which ones please?) you have been reading, but the most definitive and effective advice on how to deal with this is here on MSE and contained within the NEWBIES sticky at the top of the forum index - one page back from here.
Do please read this, then come back if anything isn't clear.
And please give us the details of the forums you've read giving you the (duff) information you list above. We can then post there to educate them. Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

You appear to have missed the advice and templates which were under your nose right here on the parking forum all the time. Please start again at square one and don't pass 'go' until you've read the 'NEWBIES PLEASE READ THIS FIRST!' thread at the top:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=163
I would stick with the tried and tested wording for the simple appeal.

You can easily beat it; please read the top thread and submit the usual first appeal (do not alter it). Smart Parking cancel when they see those words!PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
