As your BIL has chosen to put his cc details on your equipment then I think it is up to him to pay the bill as I'm sure it states in the terms and conditions of the card that it is the owner of the card to ensure details kept safe.

I guess if you wanted to be kind you could go halves. It to be honest don't see why you should as the reason you purposely don't add your details to the machine is so your child doesn't spend especially as he was too lazy to add a password.

So if you're lazy and leave your credit card lying around, is it ok for other members of the house to use it?

An adult? No. But this is an 8 year old child with no criminal liability. So who is responsible? It's the person who gave him the card details. ie the BIL
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

I'm in the "it's your BIL's responsibility" camp, but it may be worth contacting whoever the money was spent with to see if they'll refund some of it - although it might have to be your BIL who does this as he's the cardholder.

I'm not aware that anyone mentioned calling the police! This is a moral issue, and an 8 year old should know they do not spend someone else's money. Unless you are suggesting we should all hide our purses in case our nephews fancy helping themselves?

Hardly the same thing at all, an 8 year old might not even realise they were spending real money.

As an adult it is your responsibility to take care of your credit cards and not leave them lying about.

This was not in the BILs house but the child's home and he was using his parents play station so how was he supposed to know it was being charged to a credit card?? He could well have thought he was buying stuff with fake money depending in the game being played.

At the end of the day why was the BIL using the machine and adding his details with no knowledge of the owner, or in your world tomtontom do people just come and use your equipment and download whatever they like? They certainly don't in our home.

Which is fine providing that the 8 year old in question was aware that he was actually spending money.
If the BIL put his card details on the account without anyone else knowing, the kid in question may well have thought that he was using "play money".

If I put my debit card in an ATM, entered my PIN then walked away without doing anything else, should I be held liable for any withdrawls made by unauthorised persons?
In effect, this is basically what the BIL did with his card.

The BIL should take responsibility and pay it since he put his card details into the console at some point and without telling you.

Ha ha, some posters do jump to conclusions without knowing the facts . . .

Why? Seems he was very careless with his CC . . .

Ive read exactly the same as you have, so not sure what your comment is referring too.

Sony wont refund. If the OP dosent want to pay her BIL, then thats up to her.

If the BIL attempts to do a charge back, Sony will just block the Playstation account.

I think you also need to start educating your child a bit more when it comes to purchases. This is the screen he would have been presented with:

Its our playstation, we didn't know he put his details on. We dont put our credit card details on for this exact reason.

I was all for you guys paying your BIL until I read this post... Of course it's his problem, he shouldn't have put his card details on, especially without your knowledge or passwords...
