Last time I called HETAS as a result of a particularly bad installation, I was told that they "can't comment on individual business practices". Which I took to mean "if we chuck this installer off our list, we won't get his subs next year"

Cynical maybe - but they weren't concerned in the slightest that an old lady had been ripped off and that the installer had used entirely the wrong material for the job.
  • you say the fitter said liner not required, did he do a full pressure test and or CCTV survey of the joints to establish this, it would have involved getting on the roof ? he should have then fitted a birdguard. The cracks and bits falling off are they above or below the metal registerplate, you mention the wooden lintel does it have a concrete one behind it, also you say 500mm from top of stove but how far from the flue pipe is it, it should be 3x the pipe diameter in a horizontal plane or 1.5 if a heat sheild is fitted.

    Well, this one wasn't compliant.

Mind you, 300 views in 24 hours, and not a single reply. Interesting.

What is your fireplace made out of. Is there anyway you can post a pic or give a link without the www. in front and someone may be able to link to it.

If it is made of marble, then it will happen. You cannot regulate fully the heat output of a stove and as marble is full of hairline cracks ( that's what veins are ) it will happen. IMO liner or no liner, doesn't make a difference, it is what the heat from the stove is doing which is causing the issues.

Such is the beauty of marble. However, it is durable and hard to make cracked. ;)
