We have just changed from having the boxed in radiator behind a sofa, to having 2 vertical radiators. Not only is the room much warmer but we have gained about 30cm of space.

We had similar issues in our old place so put in one of these on a short piece of interior wall.
Can you still buy the old cast iron ones? Or is it a new steel one made to look like cast iron?

it is new (exactly like the delonghi model in the pic). It is a column radiator (ie. built like the old style ones).

I've seen plenty of antique ones in shops/ebay etc if you want an old one.

I have two rooms where the sofa is rammed up to the radiator. It hides them, the sofa gets warmer and they're a handy spot to place to put cups of tea.

We also have our sofa in front of the radiator , just leave a 5" pr 6" gap for airflow and put some Radiator Reflective Foil taped to back of couch to stop it being absorbed, while ur at it do the same behind the rad, you won't half tell the difference and it's only about £7 :)
  • We've had sofa etc in front of our rad since we moved in, although it's normally right up against it, however I will be moving the sofa slightly forward to see if it makes a difference.

I doubt it affects the heating of the room too much in a modern house.

However in a 200 year old home with I would guess, high ceilings, you may notice it more!
