The Mail app which is built in to Windows 8/8.1 definitely isn't Outlook; it's a lot more basic.

In your shoes, I'd be downloading Thunderbird...

As the OP,,a quick thank you to all posters...clearly there are others who have the same potential issues im trying to avoid.

With regard to email,,well i migrated to web based outlook (ex hotmail) a while ago as a security measure and find it works fab for me..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Until someone cracks your password, and gets hold of your online based contacts perhaps. I will never use webmail for my contacts, no one in my contacts has ever received a spam purporting to be from me.

The windows lappy is now in hand and thankfully its already upgraded to win 8.1 out of the box. Thanks to the tips on this forum and some pre reading, I ve fallen into using it easily and its no trouble at all. My first glitch is that I installed two apps. One is drop box and the other is tripadvisor.

Now then...both those apps have usernames in the format of an email address.

Unfortunately those usernames that I originally registered on those accounts do not match the account name im currently using for the lappy.

Am I right in thinking that's why I cant login on the apps? Is there a way round it?
    tnx peeps..

I started with locating the toolbars and building it up from there into an XP lookalike. The Metro was replaced with my own shortcuts after getting rid of the rubbish apps..
  • Have been using Windows 8 for a few weeks now after buying a new computer.. was used to XP so I found the new lay out of things a lit bit confusing at first ...but I have to say now I have got used to it I quite like it...even my hubby who is not at all computer savvy is able to use it with ease now ...you just have to point mouse at left hand bottom corner which brings up start and top right to bring up other options such as settings ...give it a few weeks and I am sure you will agree . Good luck.

In a nutshell: don't use any of the new Windows 8 features - they're confusing and pointless on a normal computer

    In a bit more detail:
Configure W8 to boot straight to desktop
Configure your default programs to be desktop applications rather than Modern UI apps
Use the Run box (Windows + R) to run applications, or make desktop shortcuts for them

So you are confused by W8 features, that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone.
Personally I don't find anything confusing and it's fine on a desktop PC. You just have to take the blinkers off and it becomes easy.

I think you should be able to login to Dropbox/ Tripadvisor with different usernames with no problem (obviously they may have different passwords as well).

The only time I'd expect an application to be linked to the username from your Microsoft Account is for Microsoft applications like OneDrive (aka SkyDrive).
