    ^^ This ^^

W8 is a POS, even with classic shell I have experienced so many problems with it its not funny.
Nope.....It's a POS on your machine, not on mine or many others. So, I'm guessing the problems lie somewhere other than the OS...;)

A good OS once you get used to it. Right-click on the bottom-left corner of the screen to quickly get to various parts of the computer. A handy function.

I was able to update to 8.1 smoothly :D it worked fine first time although it took about 6 hours + but our broadband speed is really slow which can't have helped.

I'm now trying to figure out what the email software is installed on it - is it Outlook? :o Not sure whether to give it a go or just download trusty Thunderbird that I have used for years!

The Mail app which is built in to Windows 8/8.1 definitely isn't Outlook; it's a lot more basic.

In your shoes, I'd be downloading Thunderbird...

I'll second that, The mail app is OK, but if you have been using TB then you won't be happy with it in anyway.
Download TB and it's one less thing for you to worry about as you get on with learning the system.

I had no problem with 8.1, it was 8.1.1 that was tricky.

There's always someone who does the other thing. :) I use only the Windows 8+ Mail App. It is set up for my 5 mail accounts and I think it's OK. IMAP only but I'm used to managing e-mail accounts this way now.
