Can you get into Ireland without photographic i.d I don't want to pay for i.d for 1 trip also don't have proof of utility bill they suggest a number of identifications you can use but when it came to book the ferry it just said photo i.d to be used.Just wondering if anyone used something else other then utility bill or photo i.d and did they have any problems.Have contacted the ferry but no joy.

Are you a foot passenger or a car driver?
Travelling regularly by car only once in over 20 years have I been asked for identification- of any kind! These days I have my photographic driving licence with me, should the need arise.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

I think that must be the difference then- I don't think it is travelling with Stena rather than Irish ferries. I suspect it is because I am driving a UK registered car. I do know you need a passport or other photographic ID to fly to N. Ireland!
These are quotes from the relevant websites:
British or Irish citizens travelling on our (Stena Line) Irish Sea routes do not need a passport to travel to Britain or Ireland but are advised to take a form of identity. A driving licence, citizenship card or utility bill will usually suffice.
Irish Ferries recommend all passengers bring a passport with them. Irish and British citizens do not strictly require a passport to travel between the two countries - some form of identification is however required.
It doesn't look as if you need photographic evidence if they will accept a utility bill. I think it needs to show your address. What about a bank statement, credit card statement, EHIC, tax office communication? Surely there is some paperwork which you already have!!!!!!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Only get bank statements once a year think I've still got last one don't really want to show it don't want them knowing how much I have in bank.Think I will just show them council tax letter it's kind of a utility bill used for council services. Did see all info about i.d but irish ferries don't specify how many they want just gives a long list.0 -
Thank you everyone for the replies will just have to chance it without photo i.d my hair and names irish think it might help :0)0

and I've only been asked once in 25 years x 3-5 return journeys per year... but with a car.
I hope you have your EHIC. I didn't have mine with me a few years ago....ended up at doctor and had to cough up about £50 ( GP visit +antibiotics!)
Actually I think that would be a very good form of identitiy as if you leave it attached to the letter it has your name and address, and the card shows you are resident in UK as it has a UK identifier number.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
