When you say worse off have you taken into account in work benefits?

Yes. On minimum wage even with tax credits with a high train fare i would be worse off.

also im being asked to apply for jobs 6 hours a week with train fares. At 6 hours i wouldnt even get my tax credits. Its way off 30 hours. Think yhey are getting desperate asking you to apply for any old thing.

when i really need 30 hours for tax credits is it right they should be asking me to apply for a 6 hr job with fares?..

  • I thought that you didnt have to apply for a job where you would be worse off?. I think its in the rules and you could always check this with the CAB. Then tell the jobcentre quoting the relevant documents etc.
If a job is for 6 hours only then an employer will more than likley choose someone who lives locally who can use local transport and walk to work. That is unless the job is very specialized and you havent said that it was.
So really I think your chances of getting a job like this are slim anyway.

I agree i think they are just giving me any old job to apply for without really thinking if its suitable. I would give a job to a local person as well. Its pathetic asking you to travel miles for 6 hours and pay fares on top.

OK the actual 'rules' are here:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/296129/dmgch34.pdf

Read from 34200 on wards and specifically 34246 about travel expenses.

Summing up - you would be expected to work somewhere if it involved less than one and a half hours travelling time. However, if the costs involved were unreasonably high in comparison with the pay then this may be 'good reason' to refuse the job.

Unfortunately you may receive a sanction if you refuse to apply and although you may win on appeal this will involve hassle and loss of benefits.

Perhaps the simplest solution is to apply and be refused. If the worse came to the worse then attend the interview. You never know, they might actually have more hours available when they interview you!
  • Can't you just !!!! up the interview or send a version of your CV that will guarantee you are not chosen for an interview?
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

Think of it as short term being worse off, but having a job will give you experience and show other potential employers what you can do. In the long term you may then be able to gain employment for higher pay and therefore be much better off.

This is now grounds for a sanction.

Even sending a corrupted version of your CV?

Of course. You'd be worse off, but the state would be far better off.

Why would you not want to apply anyway? Surely your pride is worth more to you than a few pounds.
