Do GPs deal with compulsive overeating?

Nonnatus I wish I knew what to say
I can only share my experiences.
I can certainly trace back a few events that triggered my bulimia - Mum could never really get to grips with the fact that I'm built like my dad not her (Mum's wedding dress has a 19-inch waist, Dad was a bodybuilder!), I chose dance as my main hobby and everyone was a tiny build, and the final straw was when a so-called friend poked me in the belly and told me "We can see who ate all the pies!". I was about 14 years old and a size 8-10!!
I'd say maybe have a look through some of the links put up for me, keep serving up healthy food and encourage her to take some exercise.
If I could help I wouldshe is very lucky to have a supportive parent like you though!

WantToBeSE - I'm honestly not sure how long it's been going on. I think I've really only just become aware of it recently!
Am definitely going to get some information together and pop to the GP. I know lots about eating healthily and exercising etc - but it's like another poster said..."my head won't let me".
I will definitely keep you all posted, and thank you again from the bottom of my heart for the advice, links and support.

Fantastic - well done you. And also for not letting the flamer/troll posts get to you. You've got a great character to be proud of.
You mention - "I'm honestly not sure how long it's been going on" - in my own circumstances, I didn't, either. I had a major meltdown in late 2001, when I was 26 (sparked off by September the 11th of that year, but that's an unrelated issue here).
I simply couldn't fathom what was wrong with me deep down, or why. CBT and the blessing of excellent NHS professionals helped me to understand that I had been dealing with something that no-one should have to face from back when I was 7. Of course, I had always, deep down, known what had happened and that it had been dealt with appallingly by those who could have helped or consoled, but it took all those years in between to realise that what happened was wrong, not my fault, and even that it had been "held back" until I was ready to face up to it.
I am by no means "out of the woods", but so glad I finally sought help. I had no idea that this would come spilling out when I first went to seek help.
I'm not saying that you have anything hidden in your background, or that your situation as a whole is the same as mine. But, sometimes, over-eating or promiscuity or inappropriate aggression is a symptom and not a cause.
Bless you sweetie - stay strong. xx0 -
RuthnJasper - I am sorry you have suffered, and also thank you for sharing your story and for the compliment too!
I will beat this

I guess I just feel a bit ridiculous that I'm a woman in my 30s who has a good relationship, great friends, loving family, holding down a good job, finding time for hobbies...but I can't control what goes in my mouth. Suppose that's what makes it a "disorder" though
HBS x
Yes, that's exactly what makes it a disorder. And telling you to 'go on a diet' is NOT the sort of advice that you need. It's in your head not your belly, and that's where it needs sorting out. In your head!
A starting-point might be if you were to sit down with pencil and paper, when you're alone and when it's quiet, and try to work out WHY you do this. Just make notes for yourself, doesn't matter if they make no sense to anyone else.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Margaretclare, that's a really good idea and I think I might do that! It's also something I can maybe refer to when I speak to the GP.
Thank you

Yes, do that.
I have a problem myself with weight control. I've heard it all. Been there....although thank the Lord I don't have the problem that you have. I have become sickened of people coming up with facile 'solutions' like 'stop eating'.
Your problem may have started with your Mum, insisting that you cleared your plate and yet commenting that you were 'fat'. It's not surprising that these early influences are the longest-lasting and the most difficult to deal with.
DH had a Jewish grandma and he tells how she used to put more food on his plate while he was still eating. No matter how he told her not to she would still do it. And he remembers that in our generation it was 'clear your plate'. I didn't get that, I don't know how I escaped it. But certainly, food was never just 'fuel for living', it always had a lot of other emotional connotations.
My stepdaughter found that writing it all down with pencil and paper helped her, but her problem was different from yours.
I think I will start a different thread, not to hijack yours.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Hijack away - now the thread's back on track I hope it can help as many people as possible

Hi HBS
There's a really good series called "Overcoming.. ". The methods are based on CBT and they do some for different eating disorders.
This one might be helpful?

But do go to your GP. Obviously some doctors are better than others, but the GP certainly should take it seriously.0 -
As a very much larger lady, I find it incredibly sad that nowadays a size 14 is considered to be obese.
Good luck HBS. xx0 -
I think the subject of nutrition and eating is massively under-appreciated within our society.
We all lead massively different and varied lifestyles that all impact how we view food.
I started a physical job about 3 months ago, in those three months I have lost 4kg, thats quite a lot when I only had 55kg to begin with! I'm not happy that im losing weight at this rate, but Its hard to find time to eat/snack when you work shifts with minimal breaks.
There's not enough support for food issues whatever problem your facing0
