Do GPs deal with compulsive overeating?

I used to binge eat (and am in sort of recovery although not better) and went to my GP but found the support they could offer very limited because of a lack of resources, I was referred to a dietitian only for my appointment to be withdrawn because I had no health complications with my weight and that was it. I did get placed under the community mental health team though for other issues and found them to be amazing, especially the therapist I had for CAT. I think what you get really depends on the area you live in and who is left in charge of organising your support & therapy, your area may have much better facilities and resources than mine! It's a long road to recover and I'm not there yet but I am slowly getting better over time. Good luck OP :) xx

It's good to hear that I won't be laughed out of the GP's surgery.

You may find your GP is pleased that you have raised the issue. Many GPs hate having to start that conversation with patients - overweight patients can be very sensitive about their size.

Thank you to pretty much everyone. I've just got in and had a read through the responses and I feel better - like I'm not just being silly.

WantToBeSE - I'm honestly not sure how long it's been going on. I think I've really only just become aware of it recently!

Counting_Pennies - The root cause of my unhappiness is myself. I genuinely don't feel I deserve to be happy because I look so awful. I know I am a nice person, but the little mind-monkeys say otherwise :(

Am definitely going to get some information together and pop to the GP. I know lots about eating healthily and exercising etc - but it's like another poster said..."my head won't let me".

I will definitely keep you all posted, and thank you again from the bottom of my heart for the advice, links and support. :)

All of those posts and the other thread have been deleted as inappropriate. How odd that you who joined after that happened should both know about them and make them the subject of your first post.

Or might think that someone was trying to derail threads, been quite a lot of that on various sections of the forum lately.

Really uncalled for, someone posts for help and it gets derailed by 2 people with about 3 posts between the pair of them.

I just woke up to a pm from Sara entitled you of all people. Because I reported their other thread that was trying to draw attention away from this one.

Not surprising, but they can save their breath, because it's going to be unread deleted and so will any other PMs sent.

A thread like this was not the place to start pedantic nit picking/borderline trolling. How disrespectful to the op.

But given the way some of the boards have been picked off lately, not surprising either.

If anyone was concerned about certain posts, they could have been reported and the thread left to carry on in the meantime.

Just because anyone on here is struggling with a certain issue, it doesn't give them the right to police the boards and focus on one post that was trying to be supportive and blow things up out of all proportion.

It will get to the point where people who need help won't post because their posts will be pulled apart by people on here with their own agenda.

OP - I know very little about eating disorders but I do have a 17 year old daughter who I adore with every bone in my body and your first post chilled me.

My daughter wears a size 10-12, everything she wears is "slim fit" or "Skinny fit" It leaves no room for imagination and material clings to every crease and fold! Yet she constantly insists she is FAT, because her friends are all willowy size 6-8 (they look like a slight breeze would knock them over!!). She eats normally, is a committed "Pescatarien" and her BMI is NORMAL (her friends are proud to be UNDERWEIGHT...!!??

But as Summer approaches she becomes more disgusted with her body (presumably because more of it is on show) and I'm afraid that anything I say or do will tip her over the edge into a disorder. I try to observe without seeming to be obsessed.

Am I worrying unnecessarily? If she was going to have problems would she already have them?
