You have a device (Windows, Mac, Android) in your hand. You look at the TV. You wish you could view what is in your hand, on your TV. You have a good WiFi network and a spare HDMI port on your TV. You buy a Chromecast...
Chromecast is capable of 1080p but the quality will depend on individual vids, and your network.

But - I can plug my laptop (and phone (with an adapter)) - directly in to my TV using an HDMI cable - so what is the gain of Chromecast - except for the lack of requirement for an HDMI cable ?

The TV and Sky both can handle Iplayer/ITV player etc already

What I am trying to get at is WHAT THE DEVICE DOES that I cannot already do ?

.. But you're asking different questions and giving us more info on your current setup - earlier, you merely asked

.. which I answered earlier, but again, what it seems to offer you is -

    No cable.
    Netflix.
    YouTube.
It's more compact, when used with a tablet, than your laptop.

You have iPlayer, which the Chromecast also does, but the Chromecast doesn't do ITV Player, or 4OD (yet).

Other advantages are in my earlier posts.

    You got it.

Lucky you - that'll save some hassle if those apps are decent.

It literally puts whatever is on your laptop screen (plus sound), onto your TV screen and speakers, over WiFi. It does cleverer things with specific services like YouTube if the enable it, intstead of going from internet>laptop>Chromecast it can just go internet>Chromecast but you've got the general idea bang on.
I take it you don't have 4OD, Demand5, Vevo, Youtube and stacks more built into your TV...

Yes we do - and also on Sky !!
So, basically - Chromecast simply acts as a 3rd tuner (Sky has 2) ?

You've described your current setup in two different ways. Each time, some of us have responded and outlined what the Chromecast does.

Is there a reason you're unable to decide this, based on the information you've been given?
