Thursday 17th April - What small DFW things are you doing today?

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of big "stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending. :money:

    Hi all

It's my fourth wedding anniversary today and I have been putting £10 a month aside since last year (not every month, but enough to have saved £80), plus my lovely mum and dad have paid in £50 "to get a few drinks" - so we are going out for dinner tonight! Hoping to keep a fair bit back though as we'd like to go away for the weekend for our fifth anniversary so it would be nice to already have something in the savings for that. Will be putting £20 a month away from next month too.

    Anyway. My other things:

    1. Checked online banking - no movement
    2. Checked Quidco - still only at 60p so can't withdraw
    3. Freebie hunting:
    1. 200 free Nectar points for registering with each of First Group's companies - potential of 1000 if it works!
    2. Redeem my Krispy Kreme voucher
    3. Free £2 Amazon Android Appstore voucher.
    4. Check wombled McDonalds Millions stickers - no prize, but found one for free fruit bag so will tuck that into purse for day out tomorrow. List spares on Ebay.
    5. Breakfast and lunch from stores - posh tea out!
    6. Try and finish library book so I can return it before long weekend
    7. Second Benefit sample used today along with free perfume sample.
    8. Free paper, magazines and coffee from home on the train.
    9. Freepostcodelottery and BirthdayBingo

I think that's everything. Will post up anything else later. Have happy DFW days all! x

  • Hello all, Happy Anniversary Lilian1997 - hope you have a great evening.

Had a nsd yesterday. Hoping for one today, though I do have a £20 note in my purse from last weekend and OH may just need a pint after work. :beer:I've decided to use the £20 for Easter treats - will get something for the sons too (they are officially adults but you're never too old for an Easter Egg/bar of choc).

Have checked accounts and spreadsheet, hung out washing, made a huge veggie curry (is in slow cooker) and will make some pasties later (didn't get round to that yesterday).

Also - and this is a new one for me - signed up to supersavvyme? to get free dishwasher tablets. Will definitely check out their vouchers before I shop for anything in the future.

Have to take the dogs out now.

Hope you all have a good day.

    Hi,
    Today I have.....
*Saved a little bit of energy by sharing nice hot bath water, line drying some washing & opening windows instead of running the de-humidyfier.
*Cleaned whole house using minimal products.
*Made sage & onion stuffing for tomorrow's family roast dinner. Sage from our garden, breadcrumbs from stash in freezer from blitzing up stale bits of loaf, also used up a wrinkly apple in it.
*Had planned to make tuna pasta bake for dinner but then realised we'd run out of cheese. Decided to make a chicken dansak before evil take-away leaflets started calling our name.....you know, like how they do....... It's bubbling away on the hob. Haven't made it before. Looks nice & plenty of it.
*Baked a big tin of Hob-nobs for Easter weekend (family arriving tomorrow, nephews can eat their body weight in other people's biscuits!)
*Lined tin & prepped ingredients for making Simnel cake tomorrow. Actually, that's not particularly money-saving though I probably couldn't buy one of the same quality for the price of the few ingredients I've had to buy for it....& DEFO not money-saving to have to re-buy the mini-eggs to go on top TWICE because we ate them!! Shall really enjoy making & decorating it though.
*Put pretty tissue paper lids & ribbons on 2 jars of my home-made marmalade ready for Easter gifts.
*Remembered to defrost rhubarb ready to make a crumble for tomorrow.
*Made a food shopping list for mr f who has volunteered to shop tomorrow morning while I bake. We will go over our food budget this month for the first time since December. It could have been worse though. As soon as I knew we were having people to stay, I started getting stuff cooked & popped away in the freezer. Will adjust May's budget to put things right & we are bound to have lots of leftovers for last week of April.
*Checked veggie plants & watered those that needed it.
*mr f brought me a Body Shop Body Butter. I love those & they are selling selected ones for £5 each instead of £13 at the moment.
Well, I've got spare beds made up, I'm as ahead with the food as I can get today, so I think we'll have a chilled out night of peace & quiet before the Neffs arrive (tho' we're very fond of them really ;-)
    Cheers,
    f x

I'm new to the forum but today I...
    1) Went to the bank, confessed my debt and asked for a loan to consolidate it (declined)
    2) Phoned Orange and reduced my phone tarriff per month by £15
    3) Put together a rough budget for next month
4)....I'm about to do an audit of my cupboards/freezer/fridge to see what food I have to try and reduce grocery costs next month
  • Hi everyone (and happy anniversary Lilian!)

Unfortunately today wasn't a NSD because I forgot my lunch AGAIN! I will also have to put the rest of this month's spending on my credit card. I pay this off every month but I'm annoyed I have got to this point again  Hopefully May will be a better month but I'll have less money to budget with now

    Surveys still to check

Tea was out of the freezer and I have made some currant buns to use up some eggs - yum

I saved some money off my home phone and broadband by renewing my tariff - getting free broadband over the next 12 month saving £6 a month - that's £72!

Did some work on the dreaded dissertation - need to keep going with this

Getting excited about seeing my family over the weekend (not so excited about the 4 hour drive to get there!)

If I don't get to post on here over the weekend have a lovely Easter :EasterBun

  • Rozmister - sorry the bank didn't help you. Do you have credit card debt and could you consolidate with a 0% card?
Great stuff getting phone tariff reduced - that's £180 a year still in your pocket!
