touched bumpers

Options
The weekend before last, as I was completing a 5, maybe 7 point turn in a private drive I touched an old car parked up opposite. I thought that it was just bumper to bumper but couldn't be bothered to get out and look.

It now appears that the incident has been reported and the police have are investigating and the other driver is claiming a damaged wing.

Is there a cheap way to get out of this without many others finding out?

Thanks

Ed

I think that you've already tried that.

As and when the police contact you for an account come clean and offer to pay for the damage even if you suspect that its exaggerated. You'll never know exactly what you did as you didn't stop to check so it sounds like you've going to have to suffer the consequences.

I reversed into another car in our staff car park last week but I left a note with my details but as yet I've not heard anything back.

Is it actually a private drive?

If so the police won't do anything.

I'm afraid that your "couldn't be bothered" to get out and check was a major mistake.

Even getting out walking to the back of the car - looking - then carry on, would have enabled you to swear blind that there was no damage.

As it is someone saw you and you'll just have to accept that there is some damage.

Offering to pay for repairs should get you out of this.

You said it was an old car - how old? - what extent is this damage?

Is the wing rusty or already with other scrapes or damage?

I once escaped huge costs by refusing to pay for a whole new bumper on a car that already had a bumper damaged in several places in addition to the dent that I put in it.

I declared that it was 'betterment' and that the owner should pay 75% of the bill.

They then agreed to accept £20 in their hand.

Blimey I get it now and its an honour to reply to a serving politician and its no wonder that you try to post under a different user name.

Ed now I know who you are I'd suggest saying that your wife was driving and get her to take the punishment, but don't be too surprised if a little lie now gets you into a lot of trouble later.

The police are unlikely to do anything even if it was on the road as long as you give them your details and are insured/mot'ed/taxed etc.

Had a woman clip mirrors of a hire car I was in once, our car was stationary. Exchanged details but she didnt have a pen or phone etc but said she "had a good memory". 4 weeks later or so got a letter from the police saying I'd been involved in a hit and run. Replied with details disputing not stopping. Never heard anything else again (from either police or woman)

Ed, you know that 306 was a family heirloom don't you, you were clearly going too far, too fast and it'll cost you.

Unfortunately I don't think so seeing as the Police have been informed :S

...Hopefully there won't be a next time but it's a lesson learned to go out and check and inform the owner. You could have probably dropped them some cash and had done with it...

Sorry mate best of luck though
