Three Network - what happens if no 3g coverage?

I was looking to switch to their 321 plan but on checking coverage on their website, it shows only outdoor coverage for 3g at my place of work. I understand they used to have a 2g fallback system in place but from what I can see this is partially withdrawn? Was just wondering what happens if there is no 3g coverage and there is no 2g fallback either. Will there be no service at all - unable to make calls and texts? Thanks

Most places with no or poor 3G still have 2G backup, it's only in their areas of good 3G that the backup is withdrawn.

Be aware that the 2G backup is voice and text only.

2G Orange (and now T-Mobile 2G, both now as EE2G) ONLY covers areas where 3 have designated no 3 coverage exists, this does not include blackspots where 3 pertain to have coverage.

In 3 coverage areas manually roaming to EE2G is barred by each base station based on 3's requirements - if in fact they have confirmed you should be connecting to any other nearby available 3 base station/signal.

I find train journeys to be the most detrimental to all mobile companies signal but more so 3 coverage, so 3 maybe is not for daily commuters requiring connectivity of any kind.

Unless your regular train company has wifi and your handset has UMA. (Any WIFI mobile connectivity, broadband QoS dependent).

Blackspots do not need a 'signal box' plugged into broadband modem/routers with UMA.

    I'll do a run down...

UMA (UMA chipped handset) & UMA Lite (Wifi Calling apps)

    UMA
Orange Signal Boost* (still live - confirmed)
BT Mobile (old Vodafone BT Business only - unconfirmed)
Vodafone (side effect of the BT Mobile UMA server - unconfirmed)

    UMA Lite

    Orange Signal Boost*
    o2TuGo
    VectoneApp

Main supporter of UMA is older non BB10 Blackberry devices, settings may have to be added (like settings for internet/mms).

    UMA Lite

    Vectone App
    o2TuGo
    Orange Signal Boost*

Android, Apple iOS, Windows, Windows Phone all support UMA or UMA Lite in one guise or another.

You must have a compatible device & firmware/OS to use either manufacturer and/or mobile networks UMA/UMA Lite variants.

It takes a little google researching to figure if your mobile network, manufacturer and device OS will support either UMA formats.

*Orange support both UMA & UMA Lite.

The OP has asked a question pertaining to 2G back up on a Three sim.

What has your thesis got to do with that? How will UMA help a Three subscriber?

Where there is no 3G or 2G backup then there is no coverage.

I've found having no data on 2G isn't bad as it tends to be rural areas where you'd only have GPRS (dialup speeds) . I tend to use wi-fi in those areas for data or wait to get back into 3G coverage.

3's 3G coverage is much better than on O2's or Vodafone's.
