Why are replacement heads for electric toothbrushes so bloody expensive?
It's not like they have any fancy electronics in them, they are only pieces of moulded plastic, the same as any cheap manual toothbrush.

£15. For 8 on amazon0

I presume it's the same reason why razor blades are expensive. Once you have bought the toothbrush or the razor you are a captive audience.0

Seriously. They're that expensive. I got a Oral B toothbrush for Christmas that I've recently started using, it will be a shame to have to throw it away for some cheap brushes. After all, it's a brush and some plastic."Always fulfil your needs, only fulfil your wants when your needs are no longer a concern" - citricsquid0 -
It's known as "the razor blade model" of pricing. Sell you the electric toothbrush at cost price, or even less, then make the profit on the replacement brushes.
It was pioneered on razors, where the manufacturers started charging almost nothing for the handle, but the blades were expensive.
Computer printers are the same. The printer is dirt cheap for such a complicated electro-mechanical system, but the ink costs a fortune. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Simple answer - don't buy branded replacement heads! Wife and I both use an Oral B, I buy generic heads from eBay a heck of a lot cheaper than £15 for 8!!0

I replaced my Braun toothbrush with a Dentitext from Aldi.
I think it cost about £12 with 6 heads.
My teeth are just as clean and I've saved a fortune in the last 4 years!!!
I think they are sold on Ebay and other sites0 -
It is the same for consoles, I think i read that consoles themselves are sold at cost price or close to a loss and people like XBOX, PS4 make money on games which was the whole point you bought the system in the first place.
Slightly different I know as you wouldn't buy a second hand razor blade, or toothbrush head, but you get the picture.0 -
Check ebay out. I have the Philips Sonic and been using it for 4 years now. I got my heads on ebay pack of 4 for well under £10. Oh and I only change the head every 6 months so use two heads a year.0

It's not a big problem- use your noggin and get on ebay. I bought 20 "Oral B" generic heads for a approx £9.-

Consoles are actually sold way below thier cost price, thats why they are so cheap compared to the equivalent pc.
All xbox and ps games basically include a licence fee that goes to microsoft/sony, and is why pc games are often cheaper
Nintendo/Wii is the exception who sell thier consoles for a profit, which is also why they lack power compared to the others0
