Problems with outgoing gmail for o2 migration to sky users?
Comments
-
add the address where?
You log in to Sky's webmail, and there should be an option there to allow you to "send email using a different address" (or something similar). You need to enter your non-Sky email addresses in order for Sky's SMTP server to accept outgoing emails with the non-Sky address in the "from" field.
Of course, in your case, you can just use GMail's SMTP server if you prefer.0 -
Moved over from O2 to Sky a month ago, 3x Gmail accounts, collecting from all over, including own domain using GoogleApps.
I've not touched a thing and all working as intended.
In fact never even gave it a thought.
Using SMTP settings same as posted by espresso.
ps never had O2 or Sky email address.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Exactly. You're using GMail's SMTP servers, which are ISP-independent, so that's why everything still works for you. Not all email providers have their own SMTP servers. If that was the case, you'd have to use Sky's SMTP server.
Providing an SMTP server is a fundamental part of the service that should be provided by ISPs so you can send email. This is something that Sky should be able to help customers with immediately when they call up. It's pretty poor customer service if they don't have a clue how their own systems work.0 -
It is correct!
It's entirely up to the OP as to whether they wish to use Sky's SMTP server or any other one.
Very few email providers have their own SMTP servers, and if you are using email forwarding with your own domain name, the chances are that your ISP's SMTP server is the only one available to you.
Your posts in this thread are totally irrelevant to the OP's problem, have only added confusion and are unhelpful.
The OP's settings were incorrect and now corrected they have no problem sending, end of.
Nothing to do with email forwarding with your own domain name etc. Using a valid Sky email etc. using Sky's SMTP server etc. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

It's got everything to do with using Sky's SMTP server! You don't seem to understand the problem.
Yes, the OP has "corrected" their settings, but using your ISP's SMTP server would be the "usual" way to do things, even if using GMail's SMTP server is a perfectly workable alternative.
I was providing this information partly for the OP, so they can understand the cause of the problem (some people, like me, just like to know how things work), but mainly for anyone else who's email service lacks an SMTP server.
I have registered a domain name. I do not have email services for that domain; emails are forwarded to a free GMX account. When I send messages, I need to set the "from" field to be the email address using my registered domain. GMX's SMTP server won't let me send email if the "from" field is anything other than my GMX address. By default, Sky's SMTP server won't let me send emails if the "from" field is not my Sky email address.
The solution, which I have given, is that you add the email address that you want to send from by setting up a Sky email address and adding them via their webmail control panel. This allows you to send email from non-Sky addresses using Sky's SMTP server.
Fine, the OP has a suitable alternative, but Sky SHOULD allow people to send legitimate email through their SMTP server. It's a basic feature of Internet access that ISPs provide.
Seeing as many people will have had this problem with Sky, I thought I'd post the full details of the problem and the proper resolution here seeing as it is exactly the same problem as the OP was experiencing. Your posts are completely unhelpful to anyone else who wants to fix the problem.

Using your ISP's SMTP server is not the usual way to do things when accessing email away from home on your mobile, tablet, laptop etc. using mobile networks, WiFi hotspots etc.
Using the gmail SMTP server is not "a perfectly workable alternative", it is the normal way to access your gmail.
