Problems with outgoing gmail for o2 migration to sky users?

My gmail account accepts them in, but not out, has anyone else had similar problems?
The SKY help desk seems to think it's something to do with the changeover from O2, but they tell me I need a pop account. However outgoing is SMTP just the same.
my Email client is Windows live mail,
I can't see any outages on Gmail at the moment on downrightnow.com
I can still send both incoming and outgoing via my live mail address
just tried changing port to 465 as they requested but it doesn't work

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's email address. The sender's email address was '**************

I understood that Gmail uses a secure connection I.E. SSL enabled as per https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?hl=en#ts=1665119,1665161
also you appear to have the wrong serverThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
It will work with the correct configuration settings:
Your SMTP server should be smtp.gmail.com, the port should be 465, and the server requires a secure (SSL) connection. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
espresso those are the settings I started with and were working a few days ago, but are failing today with my Googlemail account. I think Googlemail and Gmail are synonymous.
SKY insist I use SMTP.Tools.Sky.com as the outgoing server
what the point in changing incoming to pop if incoming is working anyway I'm not sure.
changed to them anyway and get same thingA time-out occurred while communicating with the server.

Yeah it does seem to be working now thanks, there is no need for all the sky stuff or POP.
How it got changed in the first place is something of a mystery.0 -
Sky are f***ing muppets. I had the same problem and was told that this was an ongoing issue affecting a large number of customers.
I finally managed to figure it out (with a bit of assistance). The problem is that Sky won't let you send from an "unregistered" email address in case you're trying to send spam using a fake "from" address.
The way round this is to sign up for a Sky email address (if you don't already have one), log in to Sky's webmail, and add the address that you want to be able to send email from. You'll receive an email to that address with a link to confirm that it's yours.
Once you've done that, you can send emails from that account using the Sky SMTP server (or via Sky's webmail if you prefer).
Fortunately, in your case, you have another SMTP server you can use. But if GMail didn't have one (or you had a domain name with email forwarding), you would have been unable to send mail without using Sky's SMTP server.
A few months ago, I phoned them back to let them know the fix. I'm appalled that they're still confused about such a fundamental service.

I've now registered and got a sky Email address, but not sure how to do this bitadd the address that you want to be able to send email from. You'll receive an email to that address with a link to confirm that it's yours.
add the address where?
I suspect is working anyway now0 -
I'm still not convinced my email is working. Certainly I can send my own gmail.com to my own live.co.uk and vice versa, and not receiving outbox errors

You don't need to as that is incorrect.
I have set up many email clients using ISP independent email accounts e.g. gmail, yahoo etc. and they work fine without any requirement to use the sky SMTP server or a sky email account!
The settings do need to be exactly as specified by gmail, yahoo etc. and they will work fine. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I've just got a few replies from Emails sent out to other people so it seems everything is working now0

It is correct!
It's entirely up to the OP as to whether they wish to use Sky's SMTP server or any other one.
Very few email providers have their own SMTP servers, and if you are using email forwarding with your own domain name, the chances are that your ISP's SMTP server is the only one available to you.0
