I need some tips for hiring a car at Rome airport please.
June visit
Two weeks
Two people plus luggage
We don't wish to have the cheapest/smallest, nor the most expensive. Rather something comfortable with air con and radio which doesn't cost the earth.
Reliable company. No hassle.
Do we need to take out extra insurances in England?
Which is best, car full, return full ... or car full, return empty?
Any tips and advice gratefully received.

Try Auto-Europe for some quotes.
Have fiesta 4 door for £300 or seat Leon for £400 from 9-23 june.
If it were me, I would go Full to Full. You don't know how much fuel you will use. most of the time, I barely use 3/4 tank on a 2 week holiday and use the car every day.
I would also get top wack insurance, no excess, you know what the italians drive like and Rome is one wacky place to drive in, only beaten by Paris !0 -
Rustyboy21 - have you actually used Auto-Europe? Presumably I get the top whack insurance from that particular company?
I've been scouting around, and I'm finding the prices very expensive compared to Malaga airport car hire for some reason.
Anyone else able give opinion on this?0 -
I used to use auto Europe, been with them about 5 times and never had any issues.
This time, as going to Lanzarote, I am using a co called autoreisen, which are Canary based and have had good reports on.
I think your problem is that more people hire cars in Spain, like Malaga, than do people hiring from Rome. The rates will be better from somewhere with a lot of competition.
I still say get top whack insurance, as Auto Europe are stating something like £1300 excess with normal CDW. Either that or get excess insurance in the UK. There are a number of places doing that. The excess usually gets charged to your credit card on arrival too, so that is £1300 locked away on your card, maybe take weeks to reimburse you it back too.
Have a google, there are loads of hire co's, who are not the big names. They all seem to be dearer than Spain though, must just be Italy being dear.
Good luck0
