I just get a small window with no log in details ...

I have updated windows 7 to see if that would help.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Skype...

Skype updates usually come with windows updates as MS own skype.

If you cannot resolve your probleml, un-install - restart your computer then re-install from skype website.

It is possible that they have changed the layout and you have different buttons/icons etc.

What exactly does the window show ?

Do you get any drop down menus when you choose tools or help ?

When you said you had a Skype update - did it come from Skype or did it appear whilst browsing ?

You say you uninstalled and re-installed - did you download from the Skype site itself ?

Tools - Skype Language, Skype wifi, connection options
Help - Get help answer and support, check for updates, Privacy policy, about Skype.

The update just appeared, I wasn't given an option like you would with iTunes.

I have uninstalled 3 times now and reinstalled from the Skype website.
I was going to do a system restore but think I might do a scan first.

To be honest, a system restore sounds like the best idea right now. Haven't had that issue before, even on the Windows 8 version of Skype and that is absolutely plagued with problems. The only issue you'll have is that as soon as you re-open the Skype application, it will probably automatically reinstall the update again. Just got to hope that it doesn't break Skype again.

I thought I might try an older version of Skype.
I'm pretty sure that somewhere like filehippo might be the place to go.

I have scanned the laptop and there are no viruses so I have no idea what has happened.
Even googling the problem it doesn't seem to throw up anyone else with the same problem

Try to make sure you have the latest version of Internet Explorer installed. Had the same trouble and updating IE cured it.

Unfortunately MS have requested that old versions are removed from web sites !! The usual place was oldversion.com but they do not have any, however there are still some available on other sites - just becareful of the site that has them.

Out of interest have you tried running skype as administrator ?

EG right click on the Skype icon and select run as administrator.

One quick point - if you do try an older version make sure you have uninstalled this new version, as the old install will tell you that you have the latest version and probably not run.
