So why the pre-occupation with low road tax? surely a car that costs £100 pa but will be perfectly reliable is better than a free tax car that requires work?

Cars cost thousands to run a year, so £100 here or there for road tax is insignificant, find a good reliable, economical (ish) car then look at road tax.

You posted exactly what I was going to post but worded it much better :)

Never understood people buying a car for £8,000 because OMG its only £30 to tax!!!1 :rotfl::rotfl:

My car is under the old tax system, is 17 years old and cost me £800 3 years ago. It owes me nothing, isn't really economical, but costs me nothing more than a £50 service and the odd set of discs / pads / tyres every so often .

According to modern thinking a car older than 10 years is seen as a death trap, funny how so many cars up to 50 and more years old and their often older drivers are still kicking about in daily use

No, that's just an illusion. It's a well accepted fact that all drivers before seatbelts, airbags and ABS died a horrible firey death within minutes of first taking to the road. :rotfl:

We have a 2008 Volkswagen polo 1.4 turbo diesel, most reliable car either of us have ever owned and economical to run. £30 a year tax although that wasn't the reason I bought it, it was a bonus. VWs are not the cheapest to buy (although I don't know how much ours is worth now) but as you didn't ask for cars that are cheap to buy.. when I had older cars I ended up spending a lot on repairs etc -I know nothing about cars either.

Therefore nowadays I spend a bit more money on a reliable car than get a cheaper one and spend more on repair bills which is what I have done in the past (obviously this is just based on my personal experience and other people, as evidenced by this thread, don't necessarily pay a lot out in repair bills for older cars). Personal choice.

I would probably buy exactly the same car again if I needed to.

I run a Corsa Ecoflex diesel road tax is £20, insurance is £232, I get an average of 62mpg in all driving which works out at less than 10 pence per mile.

Not the best equiped car on the road but I would certainly get another one, mine was an ex-demonstrator and cost £7000.

The issue with the low tax and emissions rating is the manufacturers made those figures up.

They can test the cars without vital parts being connected. Fit different wheels and tyres and inflate them to seriously high pressures. Disconnect the aircon and power steering and alternator etc.

You may get half of the official figures quoted.

    Do you actually believe that?

Handy to see where a car is but VED is not the be all and end all.

A little extreme, but all mpg figures are lab test figures, not what every car will achieve in normal use.

OP tax is one aspect, check insurance too. Lots of new drivers buy low insurance group cars, these are often low tax too such as the C1s, Aygos of this world. Young drivers have more claims which means higher insurance for all. Our Aygo was £20 a year tax, the replacement Mercedes is £125, but the Mercedes insurance is lower, despite being group 11 as opposed to group 1.
