Ok well I managed to gather myself enough to get to job centre I have been told that I need to go to the doctor and ask them about ESA
as I broke down and was a complete mess when talking to the lady there she said its going to be income JSA or ESA if I am not mentally able to look for a job at this time I also need to call tax credits and change the claim to a single one
So next question is and I don't mean immediately but in the future do I put house up for sale and move or try get council to buy the house back and pay rent to live here ?0 -

You are getting a bit ahead of yourself here.
1. Go to the doctors, today.
2. Do you have a joint bank account with ex? If so get a new basic one in your sole name (there is no creidt check).
3. When does you next tax credit payment come in?
4. Go on the Council web-site and report that you are a single perosn, claim the discount and CTB.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
I realise you may not want to say but can you tell us how long his sentence is (or is he on remand) and will you be getting back together when he is released?
Those answers might make a lot of difference to the type of advice you are given.
Maybe, but OP please don't feel pressured to give out any more information than you feel comfortable sharing. This is a global website and anyone can read what's been written.
Especially given the circumstances it's better to err on the side of caution.0 -
It is really quite frightening that women (and men too I guess) are set adrift without any support or advice for what to do with family finance in these situations. I also find it very sad that the OP's partner didn't help her find out what she should be doing if the worst happened ahead of time.
OP I'd take yourself down to citizen's advice they will be able to give you general advice and maybe refer you to an agency who assists women in your specific position.
With regards to the house - Hoping the council will buy it so you can stay in it is an unlikely scenario -you are more likely to need to move- but that's a whi;le down the road yet . Get decent advice from CAB -you aren't the first family this has happened to and you won't be the last.
I'm sure it feels like your world has fallen in but it really hasn't and you'll get through this.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I have a doctors appointment for weds was the earliest I could get
Bank account is in joint name but I'm the only one with a card on that account ?
So I am stuck what to do with tax credits next payment will be 4 weeks time as my husband is self employed and has sent his tax stuff off to accountant so should be getting it all back this week or next I should be calling tax credits to give them his income / profit for last year which is I worked out £9150
our estimated income for last year was based on previous year of £19000 but I changed that to around £15000 in oct time as he never had much work on so do I need to give them this info still or just start a single claim0 -
If you haven't thought about it already CAB could talk you through a lot of things, you will most likely find them more helpful than the job centre.
Where JSA is concerned you can supply most of the information on an online form, so when you have your first face to face appointment most of it is done and dusted, it also means then if you forget to take anything with you it doesn't really matter.
If they don't already know, when the children go back to school after Easter you need to tell school the family situation as if one of your children is struggling they know why and so they can better support him/her.
It might be helpful finance wise if you are okay with it to post all of your outgoings and where they are going, so if you do need to reduce your outgoings others can point out different solutions.
If you don't have one already set up your own bank account, this means when your wages and benefits are paid in he cannot touch it, it also means if he has any outstanding legal bills your money is safe.0 -
HI
CAB only have a limited number of specialist debt advisors and often a bit of a waiting list.
OP - Please ring CAP as they do face to face support. They can help you with ESA etc.

Maybe so, but the advice given would be very different if he has been sentenced to 6 months or 20 years.
The op appears not to have anticipated the imprisonment which is why I asked if he was on remand.
And I don't see the OP telling us if he will be returning to the house although I do see at least one poster describing the husband as 'the ex' for no good reason.0 -

And
I resent the implication that I pressurised the OP in any way.0 -
Also, look on the website for your local council, and apply for free school meals.I used to be an axolotl0
