H Samuel, big problem!

Hopefully I'm putting this in the correct board, any help or advice would be much appreciated
My (now) husband purchased my engagement ring for me from H Samuel back in Feburary 2011 from one of their stores. He paid a £175 deposit on a ring costing £599, but with the remaining amount on a credit agreement (paid off years ago). The salesperson advised me to go for a ring size J having tried on the ring in store, so that is what we believed to have paid for, and states clearly on the receipt. However, today we went into two independent jewellers to enquire about getting the ring resized to a size K to match my wedding ring as it's felt tight on my finger. Both jewellers put the ring on one of the sizing rods and confirmed the ring is actually a size I, not J. My question is that what would be the best course of action against H Samuel, as we have basically been sold the wrong size ring despite having the original receipts stating otherwise?

This late down the line it may be impossible to do anything, as you will be deemed to have accepted it.
You should have queried it as soon as you thought it felt tight/tighter than in store. Wouldnt have taken five minutes for them to check. By wearing it for I assume 3 years, you have accepted what they sold you.
You can certainly speak to them and ask for a free resize as goodwill, which to be honest you are quite likely to get, but thats about it.0 -
Thanks for replying so quickly marliepanda.
I should have mentioned in my OP that when I originally tried the ring on instore, I did not try on the style in the size J that we ordered. Me and my husband have already agreed that a resize offer would be good for us, it was just quite surprising to find three years later the ring has been the wrong size all along.0 -
Instead of getting it sized from J to K you should get it resized from I to KWe’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

If it is so surprising, it can't have been that tight :P
Like I said I wouldnt be surprised if they DIDN't offer to resize it, but legally they don't have to. All you can do is ask0 -

Why would they do that?
They needed J, after it being too tight they said 'lets change it to K'
When they asked the jeweller to change it to K, when they checked it was actually I all along. So they do need it resizing, but to the original size needed, so I to J. They don't need a size K ring...0 -
Not all sizing gadgets give the same size.
I wanted a wedding ring the same size as my engagement ring, but couldn't remember the size.
Three different shops measured it at different sizes from L to M1/2!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Does it matter? The ring fitted or you wore a ring that didn't fit for a number of years and you were expecting to pay to get it resized anyway. Get it resized to a size that fits you better whether that is to a j or k. Surely the numbers are irrelevant as you were expecting to pay to resize it anyway? If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Thats interesting! I assumed they were all standard... in that case you may not get a free resize after all, UNLESS H Samuel measure it and they come up with I too... maybe... (and even then I guess it depends if these things change!)0 -

It is being resized several years later, probably due to fingers getting fatter or knukles nobblier!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

Hahah well if it needs resizing ANYWAY due to that, then theres no issue, if its 'always been a bit tight and only just realised' then there may be a slight case for HSmauel to resize, but only to the original size of J, not K... If they need a K them its irrelevant.
Ring sizing confuses me!0
