Predicting how much an item will sell for

I'm a bit all excited at the moment. (doesn't take much!)
I've only ever sold bits and bobs on eBay but at the moment I have something a bit bigger for sale. I'm obviously not going to say what it is but I was just wondering if anyone is any good at making predictions!
I'm quite hopeful but I know things don't always go as expected!
So here are some facts about my item and just for a bit of fun, would anyone like to hazard a guess?
I put the item with a starting price of £50. Within 8 hours I had a bid and now the item is at just over £100. I have had lots of questions about it and quite a few phonecalls, and I have 36 watchers. I've only ever had a handful of watchers on my items so is 36 quite a lot?!?
It ends on Friday night (tomorrow) so do you think theres a good chance that it might go for quite a good price?
I know its difficult without knowing what it is but I will say that its the only one of its kind in its category, if that makes sense!!
I did have one person offer me £250 cash if I withdrew the item but as I'm a good honest person I turned them down ha ha.
So anyone want to take a guess?:D

Hi Poppy,
I had this when selling some welsh gold jewellery recently. Around 40-50 watchers and in the end got a really good price.
Then I sweated with fear for a couple of weeks in case anything went wrong, ie the purchasers were scammers or tricksters!
If somebody offered you 250 I am guessing its worth more than that and they were trying to get a bargain! I am going to guess £275.

Friday night is not the best night to end and auction but if it is a highly sought after item then it will reach its price regardless. My guess is thats its some sort of memorabilia (excuse spelling). If you haven't already stated I would add to the description that if paying by paypal they must have a confirmed address. Also make sure when you post it is posted by a trackable method.
Keep us up to date with bids and good luck.0 -
Can you not give us any ideas whatsoever, as to what it might be?
Don't need to know what the item is exactly....but whether it is old or new..worn or unworn...etc.
I have sold on Ebay for nearly 5 years and Friday night is one of the worst times to end an auction.
36 watchers is quite a lot, but you cannot go off these numbers. I once had an auction, whith unusually high numbers of watchers, but the item did not go up in bids in the last 24 hours, as I was expecting.
Good luck with it anyway, and let us know how you get on.When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!0 -
Thanks for your replies!
If it sold for £275 I'd be more than happy because I wouldn't have to think about the £250 offer!
I'm pretty gutted about the Friday night thing, I didn't realise that it was bad to end on a Friday. I suppose its because people go out.... Duh!
Ok some clues about what it is...
It's rather large, actually its huge, hence collection only. I know that in itself puts a damper on things but theres no way it could be posted, believe me!
Saying that, my current high bidder recently bought a similar item from the other end of the country so there are people prepared to travel for it.
It was made in 2000.
Its a recreational item, it's something you play with. (easy now!)
It's yellow. (which is totally irrelevant ha ha)
I don't know what else I can say without saying exactly what it is, but if anyone really wants to know, you can pm me. Put me right if even doing that is breaking any rules, I really, really don't want to be accused of advertising!
Good point about making sure that the buyers Paypal address is confirmed, I will get onto that straight away!0 -

NO you must not take paypal for a collected item, it should be cheque payment in advance and collection when payment cleared, or cash on collection.
Paypal leaves you completely open to be scammed as you have no proof of delivery. In fact you might even be targetted by scammers for that very reason.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. No, no, noooooo, you must never accept paypal on a collection only item! Even if you get a receipt for the item you can't prove to paypal they ever received it... because it won't be a RM tracking no.!
To put it bluntly... if the buyer later claimed they had never received the huge yellow item, paypal would make you refund whether you liked it or not.My TV is broken!

Not now you have a bid. There is a possibility that some of your watchers are scammers hoping to get something for nothing..just a thought. It might be better to end and relist later unless someone else can offer any suggestions?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
