Ok so apparently my gas useage for 1/4/13 to 7/2/14 is 34308.74 KWh

    1/4/13 and 26/11/13 was estimated at 5575.87KWh

    Bill for that was £321.58

Next bill was the adjustment adding approx 700

At this point I queried it and continued paying the agreed £40pm

Then in feb they looked into it, put it on hold and sent someone to read the meter

I gave them another reading 4 weeks later at start of march and not we are at £1750ish number for gas for the year

That's a bout 3 times what I'd expect for a small property, unless you have the heating on 24/7, and like the f!lat at 30 degrees. Despite what you say I'm suspicious of your bill, as an imperial conversion would give you 3 times the KWh you actually used. Check the bill.

I would be reading the meter daily and also noting how long gas appliances were on for.
  • I agree, it's definitely curious that your usage is about 3 times as expected.
If it really isn't an imperial/metric mix-up then you'll need to start elliminating other possibilties. Can you start taking weekly or even daily readings? If possible, as Dogshome suggested, try reading the meter before and after a few hours of what should be zero gas use.

I will start reading daily.. I only have the hob and the boiler.. boiler is a baxi combo that only only fires up when I put the hot water on..

I've already checked when I go outside and check the meter it's still, until I put the hot water on.

I use the showers at work and gym so occasionally useage is nil and heating has never been set to come on. Only time the radiators have been on is over December where it got exceptionally cold but that was only for a week and only a couple of hours a day.

I think I will start phoning up with daily readings and keeping a record of them myself.

I really don't understand how they've got to this and now it's effecting my credit rating.

I applied for a help to buy mortgage last week and got rejected, the broker couldn't understand why looking at my Equifax report.

It wasn't until I logged into noddle today and found that my account with British gas is showing as £1400 in arrears Feb and again in March.

So what are your meter readings for the last 12 months? Actual not estimated.

  • I live in an above average sized house - 5 beds, 4 ensuites, 5 reception rooms. Gas central heating. We are both home all day so have the heating on during the day during the winter months. I'm not bragging about this - but my dual fuel energy bill for the last year (and the tariff went up on 20th Jan 2014) is approx. £1,475.00 Something is wrong Nick......

Nick, You say you've done the calculations in the past and are being billed for a metric meter. But you haven't said if you have a metric meter.

You need to figure out what your start read was, and then post the readings here.
