Windows 8.1 Updates

This morning - I switched my Win 8.1 laptop on and was told that I needed 761 Mb updates..
I remember when a complete operating system (DOS) came on 3 floppy disks (total 4.5Mb)
Even Windows 3.1 fitted on 6 disks and Win NT 3.1 fitted on 22) !
It comes to something when updates are so huge
I reckon that it is a conspiracy between MS and Hard Disk manufacturers to sell larger and larger disks ...
I know MS DOS 6.2 could be squeezed onto 5 x 3.5" discs (1.44Mb each)
But didn't the IBM DOS come on a 5.25" floppy? (what size was that? 360kb?)
But if we must have pretty images nowadays that a graphical interface by definition requires, then of course it's going to be bigger.0 -

The Beta works fine (but that's only available to existing modernmix license owners).
Oh right. I'll have to go and download the beta.
I'd noticed yesterday that the new top 'close' bar popped up, even when you had apps in a window, and there was some confusion as to which 'X' actually closed the app.
Stardock's Windowblinds has an slight issue with the new update as well.
Think Start8 is fine though.0 -
OK I downloaded 800Mb of updates and now my laptop is stuck at 10% complete configuring windows - left for an hour - still 10% !!0

Have you checked to make sure your RAM pack isn't wobbly?0

The main update (kb2919355) is very slow to install; if the laptop is stuck after an hour I'd just restart it. You can tell its installed when you get a search box at the top-right of the metro/modern/start screen.OK I downloaded 800Mb of updates and now my laptop is stuck at 10% complete configuring windows - left for an hour - still 10% !!0 -

RAM is fine - this is a 6 month old device - it is MS who is wobbly
Try googling the latest updates!
I am trying a "system refresh"
couldn't get restore0 -
You can fix wobbly RAM packs with a small piece of Blutack. Or get an Acorn Atom.kwikbreaks wrote: »Have you checked to make sure your RAM pack isn't wobbly? That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
