Not chicken tonight because it's expensive. Not chicken because I'm vegetarian so eat Quorn (though OH eats chicken)
I recently bought from Aldi one of their Bramwell Simmering Sauces - Honey and Mustard it was 79p (I think) it was tasty and did 4 meals (2 Quorn 2 chicken).
At this price I wonder if it can be made cheaper. I'm not sure it can but it will probably be tastier HM and I like to know what I'm eating.
I'm wondering if anyone has any of this type of recipe they would like to share. I've tried googling but haven't really found any easy/cheap versions.
I also like the flavours: French White Wine, Creamy Mushroom, Sweet and Sour.

These are a great basis for any sort of casserole: chicken, quorn, mushroom, or general mixed veg. You can top with mash, scone mix, breadcrumbs etc. if you want to oven bake.0

If you go to ASDA for their cheapest range of casserole sauce about 50 pence, this is a great sauce and is very tasty.
I have had this many times and love it.0 -
My sweet and sour recipe probaly won't work out cheaper, but it pretty much uses stuff im likely to have in anyhow.
Mix diced chicken (or substitute) with a crush clove of garlic, chopped peppers and sugar snap peas (I have used fresh green beans before), the contents of a small drained can of pineapple chunks , 3 tbs of malt vinegar, 3 tbs dark muscavado sugar and 9tbs of tomato sauce
Fry of until the chicken is cooker and the veg softened. Serve with rice or chips. Job done.
This is a beautiful tasty, simple meal. I often double the sugar, tom sauce and vinegar though as I like my meals to be saucy (oo-er!)Mummy to ds 29/12/06 dd 10/2/08 ds 25/5/11:Amy angel born too soon 18/11/12, always with me Emmie Faith:A15 projects in 2015 10/15completed0 -
Also morrisons do a pouch of honey and mustard sauce for 15 pence each, again i use two for the extra sauce. Just marinade for a couple of hours and bake in the oven. I use this on pork it's really tasty.
In the same range the also do sweet chilli pepper which is also 15pence and some more expensive ones.Mummy to ds 29/12/06 dd 10/2/08 ds 25/5/11:Amy angel born too soon 18/11/12, always with me Emmie Faith:A15 projects in 2015 10/15completed0 -
Thanks carlamarie it's the recipes I'm after rather than sauces to buy. I like your sweet and sour recipe as I would only have to buy pineapple (a lot of recipes on line require hundreds of ingredients) How much sauce would you get out of one tin? I'm thinking 4 portions.0

I cant do the honey and mustard one for less than aldi price, because of the cost of cream. and the Aldi one is Delish anyway! I always have a jar of this sauce in for when feeling a bit lazy. goes lovely with pork or gammon too.
OH likes the pasta bake cheese and bacon one. I don't. but its worth a try.0 -
I think that's it meritaten I think homemade may be nicer (not necessarily tastier but with less additives etc.) but this kind of meal can't be made cheaply.
I know I can make alternatives cheaply such as casserole but I like the taste of these sauces.
For example I ate a delicious HM bolognese tonight (from the freezer) made with Quorn but I think it was the red wine that gave it the edge. I made a massive batch of it and froze it. I could have made it cheaper omitting the wine but I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. So I am prepared to pay more if it makes a significant difference. But not if it tastes identical or not as nice0 -

Sorry I don't quite understand that question, do you mean how many portions do I end up with? I use 2 chicken breast, one pepper or a mix if I'm using peppers the next day, but the equivalent to one and a handful of green beans/sugar snap peas (should have said I roughly chop these) and this serves me, youngest ds whos two and dh ( dh has a big portion) and enough for me and ds2 a second portion for the following dinner.
So three to four.Mummy to ds 29/12/06 dd 10/2/08 ds 25/5/11:Amy angel born too soon 18/11/12, always with me Emmie Faith:A15 projects in 2015 10/15completed0 -
I meant how many meals. So sounds like 4-6 (DS small portion DH large portion). Often when you buy a jar for instance it says serves 4 but if I'm not careful we can end up having half each in one meal! We are currently calorie counting so not just cost in the case of jars (often high calorie). But if I thought a tin of pineapples would do at least 4 meals I'd be more inclined to do it than if it served 2.0

lol sceb - if I made the sauce it would cost a heck of a lot more! because there would be a couple of glasses of white wine, a large tub of cream plus generous dollops of Dijon mustard and honey!
my cheapy home made sauce is a straight white wine 'gravy'. I can tell you how I make that if you like.
ok, to the chicken drippings in the pan I add a good glassful of whatever I will be drinking with the meal. and bring to boil, let it boil for a few minutes to reduce down a little. then add a good half to threequarters of a pint of home made chicken stock. salt and pepper and sometimes a pinch of sage. I either serve this as a gravy or use it to braise the chicken and some root veg in and call it 'Chicken Casserole'! costs hardly anything, apart from a glass of wine I would have probably drank anyway.0
