Anglian Water came round. They confirmed their are no leaks by checking that a little black cog in the centre of the water meter does not turn when the stop tap in the house is switched off. When water is being used that spins round. The man who visited fitted a water saver to one of the taps and provided some free bits and pieces for the garden.
Oh well, I'll be more conscious of the need to save water and hopepully after the next twelve month of paying £76 it will drop down.0 -
That flow test you could have done yourself. All it's confirmed is that there is no leak between meter and stop valve-not downstream of the stop valve. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

It did, as with the stopcock open there was still no water being used. If there were a leak inside the house, the little black wheel in the middle would have been moving.0 -
I had something similar recently, local water company sent me a letter telling me my dd was doubling. I rang them to query as they themselves had previously put it down. I had been expecting an increase but not that much. I explained politely to them that it was unreasonable to double someone's bill particularly when they say on their bills not to review payments! The end result was a credit to my account as a good will gesture, I have also suggested they indicate on the bills they send if you are likely to be paying sufficient and hence whether you can take the option to review your payments with them.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0

I might also get a water butt installed to take rain water from the roof which I could use to water the garden. Each full butt would save me about 65p.
you can make one for less than the cost of a production made water butt in a retail shop. plenty of how to's on utube.
I would also suggest, that you check the meter, the rubber part that seals them get torn up pretty bad over a few winters and like to dribble water out. check at the base connection for the meter and stop tap, water doesn't always fill the stop tap chamber if theres a void around the chamber already.
Anglian water should do a leak test, if confirmed a leak is on the supply to the building, then specifically ask about free leak repair past the boundary if they run that scheme.0 -
just to say, a problem with the cistern CAN run up a VERY high bill, so if you do come across it in future with water company a call with some readings and they can prepare you or see if a Leak allowance could be applied before billed
