MS are giving up XP support after something like 14 years, they effectively stopped selling it about 5 years ago.

As others have said, they have to stop supporting it some time, and they've kept it supported for far longer than most companies would.

do you think the extension was because Microsoft's hearts swelled up in a tremendous outpouring of guilt and sorrow for the legions of poor end users who completely against their will would have to throw loads of money at them for "new" ish products that broadly weren't new and were broadly based on vista..

or do you think sustained corporate pressure and only sustained corporate pressure, from huge multinationals, who were unprepared to change at the drop of a hat to make Microsoft richer with the sort of money and clout to make Microsoft sit up and take notice......

XP is dead, it was getting increasingly hard to get it working with modern hardware 8 years ago as it didn't support most of the current "standard" hardware out of the box
yes it's dead, mainly , because Microsoft killed it because it isn't the sort of cash cow that it was when newer far more memory bloated cash cows are now in the field to be milked....
I was glad to dump it once I made the change, Vista (and 7 and 8), install much faster, support modern standards by default, and are much more secure from the moment of install than XP was often after hours of patching.
do you not think that one of the reasons you were so annoyed about patching is because Microsoft weren't doing it for you?

.... they've all but led you to the water, the decision to drink is yours of course and you think you've made it without covert assistance

it's pretty simple - XP was good and it could have been developed a lot further to incorporate these new technologies , but it's about money.

There comes a time when endless patching of the leaking roof with spare tiles from here and there doesn't work any more.
The more you go up there to patch and replace, the more other tiles you break in the process.
There comes a time when the best solution is to stop and totally replace the tiles, batterns, felt etc on the entire roof.

So it is with Win XP.
