They vary massively depending on the age of the device, what it does, and how much you spend on it.

Our routers (over the space of about 14 years) have varied a lot, the current one is about the size of ye olde plastic VHS cassette box (not including the aerials), and I think the size is at least partly because it's got 4 LAN ports, a WAN port (so 5 ethernet ports in total), a pair of usb ports, 3x external screw in antenna and a socket for a power jack on the back in a row.

You can get really small ones if you don't need many physical ports and don't mind paying a bit extra, but generally they're fairly small, much smaller than the likes of a Sky or Cable TV box, often around the size of one of the smaller digital STB's (about 10x15x5), and they can usually be hidden away behind books or furniture if you want.

It's really a case of (assuming you're not forced to use a specific model by your isp), looking around and finding one that is the right size/look if you are really fussed and can't hide it.
But most these days are reasonably small, and you can get very small ones if you are willing to look and pay for it (I think there are some that are basically fitted into what looks like one of the old style mains adaptor plugs).

My old 8 port SMC 10/100 switch is actually bigger than any of the routers I've had :) (old tech, metal case with internal PSU taking a kettle lead and a total of 9x ethernet ports in a row dictated it's size)

TalkTalk are currently supplying at least three different depending on what package you are on, two D-Link and a Huawei, all vary in size.

Just tell her: "Not as big as the trousers you seem to want to wear around the house"

Tell her "the size of a paperback". Hope it doesn't turn out to be War and Peace.
