I borrowed two DVDs with some stuff recorded off the tele. I can't play it on my DVD player and my PC doesn't even see any files on the discs.
Is this to be expected?

OK, well I haven't got a video recorder, but doesn't the disc need to be 'finalized' before it can be viewed on a different machine?Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0

Hi,
If its a DVD player you are putting the dvd into, some DVD players don't play some discs recorded from some DVD recorders.
Its just a thought but did the person who gave you the dvd finalise the disc and also was it recorded in DVD Video Mode..0 -
If it's a DVD-R or a DVD+R, yes; if it's a rewritable disc, no. If the disc needs finalising, it would be easy enough to do in the original recorder. Not sure about DVD-RAM but not many players can cope with those anyway....doesn't the disc need to be 'finalized' before it can be viewed on a different machine?
Have you successfully played recordable DVDs before? Lots of players are choosy about the type of recordable disc they'll play. Some will only play +R or -R. I've also known machines to play one brand of recordable disc but not another.0 -
That makes sense, the equivalent of ending a multisession burn of a CD-R.Welliesorter wrote: »If it's a DVD-R or a DVD+R, yes; .

Thanks all. I'll try and get the discs finalised.
DVD -RW by the way.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
Yes you will need to finalise it on the DVD you recorded the programme. This will then let you view it on other dvd's.0

I record stuff from the tele straight onto DVD RW. If it's only for me to want on my own DVD player (the one I recorded it from) then I don't bother finalising as it still reads it ok.
However if I want it to play on another DVD Player like the one downstairs for instance then yes I was have to finalise it otherwise it won't recognise it at all.TopCashback £1792.63My Little World0 -
OK, I've had the DVD finalised. My DVD player now recognises a folder structure but no files and the PC sees the following files inside a folder with a .GROW file in the root. Still won't play though. Any further tips?
