I thought Thompson was the name of a local directory?

Didn't realise they were now doing package holidays!

No, the local directory is published by Thomson, not Thompson. Thomson holidays was originally owned by the same Canadian publishing magnate (Baron Thomson of Fleet) as the local directory.

The street wouldn't know how long you'd be away, or even if it was the house owner going away as opposed to taking someone to the airport

Likewise, anyone receiving that email would have no idea whether the entire household were going on holiday. Whereas neighbours would have a pretty good idea if the whole family left and didn't come back, with a large suitcase each, that they weren't going to the local Premier Inn for one night.

Like some scoundrel knowing the dates when a particular property was ripe for burglary.

    Just one example.

Bit far fetched though isn't it? The likelihood of the email even going to someone in the same area is low, let alone that individual being a 'scoundrel' ;)

Probably about the same as winning the lottery.
