Windows XP: From today no updates.

XP support has now ended, make sure your own security measures are up to date. Consider an upgrade.

For those intending to continue using XP, stop using Internet Explorer and get something else like firefox or chrome.

If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, the support for this also stops soon so look at alternative antivirus software.

...the reason that most people are still running XP (on home computers anyway) is that whilst they are still perfectly serviceable, they will not work with Windoze 8 -for example , my wife has a netbook which is only 2.5 years old with XP installed -insufficient RAM to run newer Windows (and no way of upgrading) - our only choice will be to install some form of Linux shortly. I have no intention of paying Microsoft any more cash so as support ends for Vista I shall be converting the rest of my home networked PCs to Linux if they are still serviceable.

The end date for MSE updates is ambiguous. It may continue until July 2015, Microsoft need to clarify.

I read that Microsoft were going to offer a free version of 8.1 as sales of the paid for version were disappointing?
I paid £15 for mine, best comment now is that its not all bad if you tweek it a bit.

PS 8.1 gets its first update today.

Continual support for Uk Goverment XP machines during transition cost £5,5 million . So Microsoft can extend XP support .

So Microsoft can extend XP support .

I'm sure they can but equally sure that now today has arrived they are not going to so home users who can't flash big contracts at Microsoft need to make plans which might be

    1. Upgrade
    2. Get a new machine
    3. Do nothing for the moment except ensure Antivirus is up to date and functioning

    No
The support for HMG and others who pay will be limited bug fixes etc for the the specific machines and the software configurations they have in the desks supported.

This is very different to worldwide support for XP covering all configurations and machines, checking that the bugs fix issued does not break something else en-route, checking that everything is still compatible post fix implementation. etc.

It is a totally different scale and saying that a possible future bug fix done for HMG could then be rolled out worldwide is misleading.
