I use Google with IE. Will it only have infected the search engine I use in each particular browser? If it has managed to migrate from one browser to another, won't it just come back from its hiding place?

No, it isn't opening a new tab. It's actually changing the page I'm on. It's coming from updatejing (well, that's what it says in my history) and it's got orange icons instead of red.


I don't understand why the anti-malware programs can't find it.

tbh I've just checked elektra's link, that method should remove it - just because it doesn't behave exactly the same, it'll just be a variant if the same

After you have followed closed's advice, if you like chrome, install dragon instead, it's a more secure browser based on the same software.

To follow my sugestion of dragon as a slightly more secure alternative, is one answer.

Though I don't know what closed's reason would be.

My opinion - McAfee is not the best security package. Kaspersky gets good reviews and is what I use.
