Had a phone call this morning, from the ENT department

'Can you come in for your grommet operation on 16th September'

    Er.... NO

I only found out two days ago that I have Menieres ( and I still don't quite believe it) and I thought I was supposed to be having more tests and another appointment with the doctor before any proposed surgery.

I've now had to phone the doctors secretary to request another appointment with the doctor. to talk to him again.

I've also phoned the Meneries Society and they are going to send me an information pack

Also, I have a friend who works in the NHS in admin, and she is going to speak to a doctor she trusts, to get some impartial medical comments

Plus, I've registered on am active Menieres forum, and I'm waiting to get posting rights, so I can get comment from other people like me.

I currently feel like I'm being railroaded into something I don't know is right for me at this stage.

Stress avoidance is one of the lifestyle elements that helps with this, but frankly my stress level is through the roof at the moment.

I'm going to go out for a walk, to try and relax

Sorry to sound off, but I had to get this out of my system!

    Hi Goldie

Sorry to hear you are feeling stressed - have a dodgy hug :grouphug: I think you are doing all the right things by taking some time to consider your options and do research regarding the menieres.

    Hope the walk helped

    BW :) xx

    Hi, BW:)

Yes, the fresh air did me good

When I got back I had a call from the doctors secretary. How it works is that the surgery date is made first, then an appointment is made with the doctor a day or so before the surgery.

So.... She's going to tell the Booking team to put me down for the 16th, and I'll be advised of my pre-op appointment soon.

Shortly afterwards I got another call, about an appointment for the battery of tests I've got to do. This is on 9th Sept.

I feel happier now I know how the system works.

I'll be listing all the things I want to ask, and I'd only go ahead with the OP if I was happy.

I still can't believe how quickly this is moving.

I've found a good low salt cookbook on Amazon which I will order, plus a 'Menieres Memoire' which I'm going to download on my Kindle. When you read stuff on the forums people tend to post about the negative side of things, the memoire looks more positive reading, which I think will be useful.

I also had a letter from Audiology today- my hearing aid fitting appointment is 3rd October.

I've never had much to do with hospitals before, now it seems like I'm there every week.

Work tomorrow, I'll have to see my manager about the stress avoidance side of things.

There's 4 roles in our team..... 2 are more stressful, the others less so. I think I might ask to be allocated to the less stressful roles. I don't really like to ask this, as I don't want to put more stress on my team mates, but on the other hand this is something I need for medical reasons.

I might also take the opportunity to confirm my proposed leaving date of 18th December.

Although, I keep wondering whether to bring it forward, to eliminate any possibility of work stress. But don't want to make any rash decisions.

Hmmm, I've rambled a bit, but it's good to get things out of my mind.

  • Both my Dad and a friend of mine were hard of hearing in one ear and both suffered from bouts of vertigo. My Dads doctor told him he had Menieres (without any tests being made) and to take Sturgeon sea sickness pills when he had a bout. It worked for him. Neither my Dad or my friend were offered grommets. My GD had grommets when she was very tiny because she had a hearing problem (glue ear I think) and had no problem with the procedure at all.

Hi W&S, thanks for dropping in.

It seems that people have so many differing treatments, I think it depends on the doctors personal preference.

But you've just triggered a question I will ask the doc - why does he think that a grommet is best for me, in my personal situation

    Thank you ! :)

Good heavens, GG! You've got a lot on your plate, very suddenly about the grommets in particular, and you're not rambling at all - I think its really important to be as informed as possible about all this ... I'm glad you're not letting yourself be railroaded. And posting on here is the *way*, very often, not to make rash decisions :)

    Hope today is good :)

    Hi KC:)

I decided not to go to work today. I had a really good nights sleep last night, but when I work up could tell that I was still very tired.

I decided to listen to what my body was saying, and to stay home and relax, after all the kerfuffle of the last few days

In the past I've always been one to 'work through' tiredness, and I would have gone to work regardless of how I was feeling, but I think I'm going to have to learn to rest when I think I need it.

So I'm currently propped up in bed with my iPad. But I will get up shortly, as I want my breakfast

General plans, relax, reading, have a walk, don't Google things!

It was completely the right thing for me to stay home, I feel much more rested now.

Been doing some quiet thinking. I spoke to the doctor's secretary yesterday, and she passed on a message from the doctor, that each time there is a vertigo attack, there's the chance that more hearing has been lost.

Very much food for thought, as I'm aware that my hearing in the affected ear has dropped between April (when I first become aware of hearing loss) and now. So I can now understand why the doctor feels urgent action is appropriate.

Also, I looked at the timing of my 5 major vertigo attacks, and all of them (except one) happened within a few days of me eating out / eating more / or having a significant degree of stress.

As restaurant food tends to have much more salt, it made me realise how important the low salt diet advice is. Not to mention stress avoidance!

At least I now feel as if I'm in a position of understanding, which, for me, is vital for any decision I might make

I've sent away for the low salt cookbook, and hoping it arrives on Saturday. Then I can include ingredients I might need on Sundays online order.

I've been cost focussed on groceries this year, but that will now change, as salt content will be the most important thing, even if it means spending a bit more. But, as most things will have to be made from scratch, I still feel my outgoings will be acceptable.

Had a good walk this afternoon too :)

Glad to hear you've rested up and had some quiet thinking time too!
I'm also a person who tends to Work my way through everything...just soldiering on...but this week I had a great need to be inside my own house walls.
I pottered about, did this and that all in my own sweet time and ended up feeling all the better for it!
You'll make the right decision re the grommet/treatment I'm sure.
    And roll on retirement!
